L’intrusion de la violence

4 L’homme s’unit à Eve, sa femme ; elle devint enceinte et donna naissance à Caïn. Elle dit : J’ai formé un homme avec l’aide de l’Eternel.

2 Elle mit encore au monde le frère de Caïn, Abel. Abel devint berger et Caïn cultivateur.

3 Au bout d’un certain temps, Caïn présenta des produits de la terre en offrande à l’Eternel. 4 Abel, lui aussi, fit une offrande : il présenta les premiers-nés de son troupeau et en offrit les meilleurs morceaux. L’Eternel prêta attention à Abel et à son offrande[a] ; 5 mais pas à Caïn et son offrande. Cela mit Caïn dans une grande colère, et son visage s’assombrit.

6 L’Eternel dit à Caïn : Pourquoi es-tu en colère et pourquoi ton visage est-il sombre ? 7 Si tu agis bien, tu le relèveras. Mais si tu n’agis pas bien, le péché est tapi à ta porte : son désir se porte vers toi, mais toi, domine-le !

8 Mais Caïn dit à son frère Abel : Allons aux champs[b].

Et lorsqu’ils furent dans les champs, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua[c].

9 Alors l’Eternel demanda à Caïn : Où est ton frère Abel ?

– Je n’en sais rien, répondit-il. Suis-je le gardien de mon frère ?

10 Dieu lui dit : Qu’as-tu fait ? J’entends le sang de ton frère crier vengeance depuis la terre jusqu’à moi. 11 Maintenant, tu es maudit et chassé loin du sol qui a bu le sang de ton frère versé par ta main. 12 Lorsque tu cultiveras le sol, il te refusera désormais ses produits, tu seras errant et fugitif sur la terre.

13 Caïn dit à l’Eternel : Ma faute est trop lourde à porter. 14 Voici que tu me chasses aujourd’hui loin du sol fertile, et je devrai me cacher loin de toi, je serai errant et fugitif sur la terre et si quelqu’un me trouve, il me tuera.

15 L’Eternel lui dit : Eh bien ! Si on tue Caïn, il sera vengé sept fois.

Et l’Eternel marqua Caïn d’un signe pour qu’il ne soit pas tué par qui le rencontrerait.

16 Caïn partit loin de l’Eternel : il alla séjourner au pays de Nod, le pays de l’Errance, à l’orient d’Eden, le pays des Délices.

La lignée de Caïn

17 Caïn s’unit à sa femme, elle devint enceinte et mit au monde Hénok. Caïn bâtissait une ville qu’il appela Hénok, du nom de son fils.

18 Hénok fut l’ancêtre d’Irad, qui eut pour descendants : Mehouyaël, Metoushaël et Lémek.

19 Lémek prit deux femmes pour épouses : l’une s’appelait Ada et l’autre Tsilla. 20 Ada mit au monde Yabal, le père des nomades habitant sous des tentes et au milieu de leurs troupeaux. 21 Il avait pour frère Youbal, le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la lyre et de la flûte. 22 Tsilla, de son côté, mit au monde Toubal-Caïn, qui forgeait tous les instruments de bronze et de fer. La sœur de Toubal-Caïn s’appelait Naama.

23 Lémek dit à ses femmes :

Ada et Tsilla, ╵écoutez-moi bien,
femmes de Lémek, ╵et prêtez l’oreille ╵à ce que je dis :
J’ai tué un homme ╵pour une blessure
et un jeune enfant ╵pour prix de ma plaie.
24 Caïn sera vengé sept fois
et Lémek soixante-dix-sept fois.

25 Adam s’unit encore à sa femme et elle mit au monde un fils qu’elle nomma Seth car, dit-elle, Dieu m’a suscité une autre descendance pour remplacer Abel que Caïn a tué. 26 Seth aussi eut un fils qu’il appela Enosh. C’est à cette époque-là qu’on a commencé à prier l’Eternel.

L’histoire de la famille d’Adam

D’Adam aux fils de Noé

5 Voici l’histoire de la famille d’Adam. Quand Dieu créa les êtres humains, il les fit de telle sorte qu’ils lui ressemblent. 2 Il les créa homme et femme, il les bénit et leur donna le nom d’hommes le jour où ils furent créés.

3 Adam était âgé de 130 ans quand il eut un fils qui lui ressemble, qui soit son image. Il lui donna le nom de Seth. 4 Après cela, Adam vécut encore 800 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 5 La durée totale de sa vie fut de 930 ans, puis il mourut.

6 Quand Seth fut âgé de 105 ans, il eut pour fils[d] Enosh. 7 Après cela, il vécut encore 807 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 8 Il mourut à l’âge de 912 ans.

9 Quand Enosh fut âgé de 90 ans, il eut pour fils Qénân. 10 Après cela, il vécut encore 815 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 11 Il mourut à l’âge de 905 ans.

12 Quand Qénân fut âgé de 70 ans, il eut pour fils Mahalaléel. 13 Après cela, il vécut encore 840 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 14 Il mourut à l’âge de 910 ans.

15 Quand Mahalaléel fut âgé de 65 ans, il eut pour fils Yéred. 16 Après cela, Mahalaléel vécut encore 830 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 17 Il mourut à l’âge de 895 ans.

18 Quand Yéred fut âgé de 162 ans, il eut pour fils Hénok. 19 Après cela, il vécut encore 800 ans, et il eut d’autres enfants. 20 Il mourut à l’âge de 962 ans.

21 Quand Hénok fut âgé de 65 ans, il eut pour fils Mathusalem. 22 Après cela, Hénok mena sa vie sous le regard de Dieu durant 300 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 23 La durée totale de sa vie fut de 365 ans.

24 Hénok vécut en communion avec Dieu puis il disparut, car Dieu le prit[e].

25 Quand Mathusalem fut âgé de 187 ans, il eut pour fils Lémek. 26 Après cela, il vécut encore 782 ans et il eut d’autres enfants. 27 Il mourut à l’âge de 969 ans.

28 Quand Lémek fut âgé de 182 ans, il eut un fils. 29 Il l’appela Noé (Consolation[f]) en disant : Celui-ci nous consolera de notre travail et de la tâche pénible que nous impose ce sol que l’Eternel a maudit. 30 Après cela, Lémek vécut encore 595 ans, et il eut d’autres enfants. 31 Il mourut à l’âge de 777 ans.

32 Quand Noé fut âgé de 500 ans, il eut pour fils Sem, Cham et Japhet.

Caín y Abel

4 Y el hombre conoció a Eva, su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Caín[a], y dijo: He adquirido varón[b] con la ayuda del Señor. 2 Después[c] dio a luz a su hermano Abel. Y Abel(A) fue pastor(B) de ovejas y Caín fue labrador de la tierra. 3 Y aconteció que al transcurrir el tiempo[d], Caín trajo al Señor una ofrenda del fruto de la tierra. 4 También Abel(C), por su parte, trajo de los primogénitos de sus ovejas y de la grosura de los mismos. Y el Señor miró con agrado a Abel y a su ofrenda(D), 5 pero a Caín y su ofrenda no miró con agrado(E). Y Caín se enojó mucho(F) y su semblante se demudó. 6 Entonces el Señor dijo a Caín: ¿Por qué estás enojado(G), y por qué se ha demudado tu semblante? 7 Si haces bien, ¿no serás aceptado?[e](H) Y si no haces bien, el pecado(I) yace a la puerta y te codicia[f], pero tú debes dominarlo(J). 8 Y Caín dijo a su hermano Abel: vayamos al campo[g]. Y aconteció que cuando estaban en el campo, Caín se levantó contra su hermano Abel y lo mató(K).

La maldición de Caín

9 Entonces el Señor dijo a Caín: ¿Dónde está tu hermano Abel(L)? Y él respondió: No sé. ¿Soy yo acaso guardián de mi hermano? 10 Y Él le dijo: ¿Qué has hecho? La voz de la sangre de tu hermano clama a mí desde la tierra(M). 11 Ahora pues, maldito(N) eres de la tierra, que ha abierto su boca para recibir de tu mano la sangre de tu hermano. 12 Cuando cultives el suelo, no te dará más su vigor(O); vagabundo y errante serás en la tierra(P). 13 Y Caín dijo al Señor: Mi castigo[h] es demasiado grande para soportarlo. 14 He aquí, me has arrojado(Q) hoy de la faz de la tierra, y de tu presencia[i] me esconderé, y seré vagabundo y errante en la tierra(R); y sucederá que cualquiera que me halle me matará(S). 15 Entonces el Señor le dijo: No será así[j]; pues cualquiera que mate a Caín, siete veces sufrirá venganza(T). Y puso el Señor una señal[k] sobre Caín, para que cualquiera que lo hallase no lo matara(U).

Descendientes de Caín

16 Y salió Caín de la presencia del Señor(V), y se estableció[l] en la tierra de Nod[m], al oriente del Edén. 17 Y conoció Caín a su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Enoc; y edificó una ciudad y la llamó[n] Enoc, como el nombre de su hijo. 18 A Enoc le nació Irad, Irad engendró a Mehujael, Mehujael engendró a Metusael, y Metusael engendró a Lamec. 19 Lamec tomó para sí dos mujeres(W); el nombre de una era Ada, y el nombre de la otra, Zila. 20 Y Ada dio a luz a Jabal, el cual fue padre de los que habitan en tiendas y tienen ganado. 21 Su hermano se llamaba Jubal, el cual fue padre de todos los que tocan la lira[o] y la flauta. 22 Y Zila a su vez dio a luz a Tubal-caín, forjador de todo utensilio[p] de bronce y de hierro; y la hermana de Tubal-caín era Naama. 23 Y Lamec dijo a sus mujeres:

Ada y Zila, oíd mi voz;
mujeres de Lamec,
prestad oído a mis palabras,
pues he dado muerte[q](X) a un hombre por haberme herido,
y a un muchacho por haberme pegado.
24 Si siete veces(Y) es vengado Caín,
entonces Lamec lo será setenta veces siete[r].

Nacimiento de Set

25 Y conoció Adán otra vez a su mujer(Z); y ella dio a luz un hijo y le puso por nombre Set[s], porque, dijo ella: Dios me ha dado[t] otro hijo[u] en lugar de Abel, pues Caín lo mató(AA). 26 A Set le nació también un hijo y le puso por nombre Enós(AB). Por ese tiempo comenzaron los hombres a invocar[v] el nombre del Señor(AC).

Descendientes de Adán

5 Este es el libro de las generaciones de Adán. El día que Dios creó al hombre, a semejanza de Dios lo hizo(AD). 2 Varón y hembra los creó(AE); y los bendijo(AF), y los llamó Adán[w] el día en que fueron creados. 3 Cuando Adán había vivido ciento treinta años, engendró un hijo a su semejanza, conforme a su imagen, y le puso por nombre Set. 4 Y los días de Adán después de haber engendrado a Set fueron ochocientos años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 5 El total de los días que Adán vivió fue de novecientos treinta años, y murió.

6 Y Set vivió ciento cinco años, y engendró a Enós. 7 Y vivió Set ochocientos siete años después de haber engendrado a Enós, y engendró hijos e hijas. 8 El total de los días de Set fue de novecientos doce años, y murió.

9 Y Enós vivió noventa años, y engendró a Cainán. 10 Y vivió Enós ochocientos quince años después de haber engendrado a Cainán, y engendró hijos e hijas. 11 El total de los días de Enós fue de novecientos cinco años, y murió.

12 Y Cainán vivió setenta años, y engendró a Mahalaleel. 13 Y vivió Cainán ochocientos cuarenta años después de haber engendrado a Mahalaleel, y engendró hijos e hijas. 14 El total de los días de Cainán fue de novecientos diez años, y murió.

15 Y Mahalaleel vivió sesenta y cinco años, y engendró a Jared. 16 Y vivió Mahalaleel ochocientos treinta años después de haber engendrado a Jared, y engendró hijos e hijas. 17 El total de los días de Mahalaleel fue de ochocientos noventa y cinco años, y murió.

18 Y Jared vivió ciento sesenta y dos años, y engendró a Enoc. 19 Y vivió Jared ochocientos años después de haber engendrado a Enoc, y engendró hijos e hijas. 20 El total de los días de Jared fue de novecientos sesenta y dos años, y murió.

21 Y Enoc vivió sesenta y cinco años, y engendró a Matusalén. 22 Y Enoc anduvo con Dios(AG) trescientos años después de haber engendrado a Matusalén, y engendró hijos e hijas. 23 El total de los días de Enoc fue de trescientos sesenta y cinco años. 24 Y Enoc anduvo con Dios(AH), y desapareció[x] porque Dios se lo llevó(AI).

25 Y Matusalén vivió ciento ochenta y siete años, y engendró a Lamec. 26 Y vivió Matusalén setecientos ochenta y dos años después de haber engendrado a Lamec, y engendró hijos e hijas. 27 El total de los días de Matusalén fue de novecientos sesenta y nueve años, y murió.

28 Y Lamec vivió ciento ochenta y dos años, y engendró un hijo. 29 Y le puso por nombre Noé[y], diciendo: Este nos dará descanso de[z] nuestra labor y del trabajo de nuestras manos, por causa de la tierra que el Señor ha maldecido(AJ). 30 Y vivió Lamec quinientos noventa y cinco años después de haber engendrado a Noé, y engendró hijos e hijas. 31 El total de los días de Lamec fue de setecientos setenta y siete años, y murió.

32 Y Noé tenía quinientos años(AK), y[aa] engendró a Sem, a Cam y a Jafet.

Cain and Abel

4 Adam[a] made love to his wife(A) Eve,(B) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[b](C) She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth[c] a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.(D)

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.(E) 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering(F) to the Lord.(G) 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions(H) from some of the firstborn of his flock.(I) The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,(J) 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?(K) Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door;(L) it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.(M)”

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.(N)

9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”(O)

“I don’t know,(P)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.(Q) 11 Now you are under a curse(R) and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.(S) You will be a restless wanderer(T) on the earth.(U)”

13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;(V) I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,(W) and whoever finds me will kill me.”(X)

15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain(Y) will suffer vengeance(Z) seven times over.(AA)” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence(AB) and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden.(AC)

17 Cain made love to his wife,(AD) and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city,(AE) and he named it after his son(AF) Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

19 Lamech married(AG) two women,(AH) one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments(AI) and pipes.(AJ) 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged(AK) all kinds of tools out of[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

23 Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
    wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed(AL) a man for wounding me,
    a young man for injuring me.
24 If Cain is avenged(AM) seven times,(AN)
    then Lamech seventy-seven times.(AO)”

25 Adam made love to his wife(AP) again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,[h](AQ) saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”(AR) 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.(AS)

At that time people began to call on[i] the name of the Lord.(AT)

From Adam to Noah

5 This is the written account(AU) of Adam’s family line.(AV)

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.(AW) 2 He created them(AX) male and female(AY) and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind”[j] when they were created.

3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image;(AZ) and he named him Seth.(BA) 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.(BB)

6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father[k] of Enosh.(BC) 7 After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.(BD) 10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel.(BE) 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.(BF) 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.(BG) 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.(BH) 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God(BI) 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God;(BJ) then he was no more, because God took him away.(BK)

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech.(BL) 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah[l](BM) and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.(BN)” 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old,(BO) he became the father of Shem,(BP) Ham and Japheth.(BQ)
