He also said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”(A)

But he said, “Lord God, how can I know(B) that I will possess it?”

He said to him, “Bring me a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

10 So he brought all these to him, cut them in half, and laid the pieces opposite each other, but he did not cut the birds(C) in half. 11 Birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. 12 As the sun was setting, a deep sleep(D) came over Abram, and suddenly great terror and darkness descended on him.

13 Then the Lord said to Abram,(E) “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be resident aliens(F) for four hundred years(G) in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.[a] 14 However, I will judge the nation they serve,(H) and afterward they will go out with many possessions.(I) 15 But you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.(J) 16 In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”[b](K)

And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
