26 Then God said, (A)“Let us make man[a] in our image, (B)after our likeness. And (C)let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image,

    (D)male and female he created them.

  1. Genesis 1:26 Probable reading of the original Hebrew text (see Syriac); Masoretic Text the earth

then the Lord God formed the man of (A)dust from the ground and (B)breathed into his (C)nostrils the breath of life, and (D)the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a (E)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (F)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, (G)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of (H)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the (I)Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 The Lord God took the man (J)and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (K)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat[a] of it you (L)shall surely die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; (M)I will make him a helper fit for[b] him.” 19 (N)Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[c] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and (O)brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[d] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (P)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[e] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is (Q)bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was (R)taken out of Man.”[f]

24 (S)Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

The Fall

Now (T)the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You[g] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, (U)‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” (V)But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,[h] she took of its fruit (W)and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, (X)and he ate. (Y)Then the eyes of both were opened, (Z)and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool[i] of the day, and the man and his wife (AA)hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”[j] 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, (AB)because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, (AC)“The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, (AD)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
    cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
    and (AE)dust you shall eat
    all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[k] and (AF)her offspring;
(AG)he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
    (AH)in pain you shall bring forth children.
(AI)Your desire shall be contrary to[l] your husband,
    but he shall (AJ)rule over you.”

17 And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
    and have eaten of the tree
(AK)of which I commanded you,
    ‘You shall not eat of it,’
(AL)cursed is the ground because of you;
    (AM)in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
    and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
    you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
    for out of it you were taken;
(AN)for you are dust,
    and (AO)to dust you shall return.”

Then the Lord God formed(A) a man[a](B) from the dust(C) of the ground(D) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(E) of life,(F) and the man became a living being.(G)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(H) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(I) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(J) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(K)

10 A river(L) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(M) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(N) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[b](O) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[c] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(P) it runs along the east side of Ashur. 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(R) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(S) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(T) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(U)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(V)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(W) and all the birds in the sky.(X) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(Y) each living creature,(Z) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[d] no suitable helper(AA) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AB) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[e] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[f](AC) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(AD)
she shall be called(AE) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(AF)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(AG) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AH)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AI) and they felt no shame.

The Fall

Now the serpent(AJ) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?(AK)

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,(AL) but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”(AM)

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.(AN) “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,(AO) knowing good and evil.”

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable(AP) for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,(AQ) who was with her, and he ate it.(AR) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;(AS) so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.(AT)

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking(AU) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid(AV) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”(AW)

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid(AX) because I was naked;(AY) so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?(AZ) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?(BA)

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me(BB)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,(BC) and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed(BD) are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust(BE)
    all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring[g](BF) and hers;(BG)
he will crush[h] your head,(BH)
    and you will strike his heel.”

16 To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
    with painful labor you will give birth to children.(BI)
Your desire will be for your husband,
    and he will rule over you.(BJ)

17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’(BK)

“Cursed(BL) is the ground(BM) because of you;
    through painful toil(BN) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.(BO)
18 It will produce thorns and thistles(BP) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.(BQ)
19 By the sweat of your brow(BR)
    you will eat your food(BS)

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as (A)sin came into the world through one man, and (B)death through sin, and (C)so death spread to all men[a] because (D)all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but (E)sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not (F)like the transgression of Adam, (G)who was a type of (H)the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for (I)many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For (J)the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought (K)justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness (L)reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass[b] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[c] leads to justification and life for (M)all men. 19 For as by the one man's (N)disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's (O)obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now (P)the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, (Q)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, (R)as sin reigned in death, (S)grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(A) and death through sin,(B) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(C)

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.(D) 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,(E) who is a pattern of the one to come.(F)

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,(G) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,(H) overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death(I) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life(J) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(K) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(L) and life(M) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(N) the many were made sinners,(O) so also through the obedience(P) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(Q) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(R) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(S) so also grace(T) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(U) through Jesus Christ our Lord.
