²⁵ Then he said:

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, ^(A)whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.

²³ Now therefore, you are ^(A)cursed, and none of you shall be freed from being slaves—woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”

^16 (A)‘Cursed is the one who treats his father or his mother with contempt.’

“And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’

²⁸ And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites ^[a]under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.

^29 (A)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

³⁰ Nor did ^(B)Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and ^[b]were put under tribute.

^20 (A)All the people who were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not of the children of Israel— ²¹ that is, their descendants ^(B)who were left in the land after them, ^(C)whom the children of Israel had not been able to destroy completely—^(D)from these Solomon raised ^(E)forced labor, as it is to this day.

²⁷ And that day Joshua made them ^(A)woodcutters and water carriers for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, ^(B)in the place which He would choose, even to this day.

⁴¹ “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ^(A)‘Depart from Me, you cursed, ^(B)into the everlasting fire prepared for ^(C)the devil and his angels:

^7 (A)All the people who were left of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not of Israel— ⁸ that is, their descendants who were left in the land after them, whom the children of Israel did not destroy—from these Solomon raised forced labor, as it is to this day.
