¹³ They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah,^(A) near Mamre,^(B) which Abraham had bought along with the field^(C) as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.^(D)

¹⁶ Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.^(A)

The Death of Jacob

²⁹ Then he gave them these instructions:^(A) “I am about to be gathered to my people.^(B) Bury me with my fathers^(C) in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,^{(D) 30} the cave in the field of Machpelah,^(E) near Mamre^(F) in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field^(G) as a burial place^(H) from Ephron the Hittite. ³¹ There Abraham^(I) and his wife Sarah^(J) were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah^(K) were buried, and there I buried Leah.^(L)

¹⁶ Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver,^(A) according to the weight current among the merchants.^(B)

¹⁷ So Ephron’s field in Machpelah^(C) near Mamre^(D)—both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field—was deeded ¹⁸ to Abraham as his property^(E) in the presence of all the Hittites^(F) who had come to the gate^(G) of the city.

¹⁸ Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried in his palace garden,^(A) the garden of Uzza. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.

²⁹ Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,^(A) old and full of years.^(B) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.^(C)

²⁷ Jacob came home to his father Isaac^(A) in Mamre,^(B) near Kiriath Arba^(C) (that is, Hebron),^(D) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.^(E)

⁹ His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him^(A) in the cave of Machpelah^(B) near Mamre,^(C) in the field of Ephron^(D) son of Zohar the Hittite,^(E)

²⁰ So the field and the cave in it were deeded^(A) to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.^(B)
