50 Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.^(A)

⁴ I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.^(A) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.^(B)”

Believers Who Have Died

¹³ Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed^(A) about those who sleep in death,^(B) so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.^(C)

⁴ Fathers,^[a] do not exasperate your children;^(A) instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.^(B)

² Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.

³⁵ Jesus wept.^(A)

³⁶ Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”^(B)

³⁷ But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man^(C) have kept this man from dying?”^(D)

Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead

³⁸ Jesus, once more deeply moved,^(E) came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.^(F)

³⁸ When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,^(A) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. ³⁹ He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”^(B)

¹⁴ Now Elisha had been suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. “My father! My father!” he cried. “The chariots^(A) and horsemen of Israel!”

⁷ Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.^{(A) 8} Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.^(B)
