³ And Jacob said to Joseph, ^(A)“God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at ^(B)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,

³ I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as ^(A)God Almighty,^[a] but by my name the ^(B)Lord I did not make myself known to them.

⁹ God appeared^[a] to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. ¹⁰ And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; ^(A)no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but ^(B)Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. ¹¹ And God said to him, ^(C)“I am God Almighty:^[b] be ^(D)fruitful and multiply. ^(E)A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.^{[c] 12 (F)}The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your offspring after you.”

^3 (A)God Almighty^[a] bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.

Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty;^[a] walk before me, and be ^(A)blameless,

^11 (A)having the glory of God, ^(B)its radiance ^(C)like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

²³ And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (^(A)Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)

⁶ And Jacob came to ^(A)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, ⁷ and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel,^[a] because ^(B)there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother.
