³¹ it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. So your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

²⁹ But if you ^(A)take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.’

³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters ^(A)arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For ^(B)I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

The Comfort of Christ’s Coming

¹³ But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen ^[a]asleep, lest you sorrow ^(A)as others ^(B)who have no hope.

¹⁰ For ^(A)godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; ^(B)but the sorrow of the world produces death.

²² So David said to Abiathar, “I knew that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have caused the death of all the persons of your father’s ^[a]house.

¹⁷ So the messenger answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured.”

¹⁸ Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

²⁶ So Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and ^(A)conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and ^(B)let not our hand be upon him, for he is ^(C)our brother and ^(D)our flesh.” And his brothers listened.
