² Then put my cup,^(A) the silver one,^(B) in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.

⁸ I am not commanding you,^(A) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.

¹⁶ “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.^(A) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.^(B)

³ you must not listen to the words of that prophet^(A) or dreamer.^(B) The Lord your God is testing^(C) you to find out whether you love^(D) him with all your heart and with all your soul.

¹⁶ He gave you manna^(A) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,^(B) to humble and test^(C) you so that in the end it might go well with you.

² Remember how the Lord your God led^(A) you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test^(B) you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

³² They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews,^(A) for that is detestable to Egyptians.^(B)

²⁰ But you must bring your youngest brother to me,^(A) so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

¹⁵ And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives,^(A) you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.^{(B) 16} Send one of your number to get your brother;^(C) the rest of you will be kept in prison,^(D) so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth.^(E) If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!^(F)”
