⁹ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”^(A)

“I don’t know,^(B)” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil,^(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.^(B) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.^(C)

⁴ Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?^(A) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”^(B)

⁵ When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.^(C) And great fear^(D) seized all who heard what had happened. ⁶ Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,^(E) and carried him out and buried him.

⁷ About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. ⁸ Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”^(F)

⁹ Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?^(G) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

⁹ But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”^(A)

¹⁰ He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid^(B) because I was naked;^(C) so I hid.”

¹¹ And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?^(D) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?^(E)”

³² They took the ornate robe^(A) back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”
