⁸ Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to ^(A)your brother's wife and ^(B)perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

²³ The same day ^(A)Sadducees came to him, ^(B)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, ²⁴ saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ^(C)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ ²⁵ Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. ²⁶ So too the second and third, down to the seventh. ²⁷ After them all, the woman died.

⁵ Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth^[a] the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order ^(A)to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” ^6 (B)Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”

^7 (C)Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. ⁸ So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. ⁹ Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to ^(D)Chilion and to Mahlon. ¹⁰ Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, ^(E)to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” ¹¹ Then all the people who were ^(F)at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, ^(G)who together ^(H)built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in ^(I)Ephrathah and ^(J)be renowned in Bethlehem,

Laws Concerning Levirate Marriage

^5 (A)“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her ^(B)husband's brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. ⁶ And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that ^(C)his name may not be blotted out of Israel. ⁷ And if the man does not wish to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall ^(D)go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband's brother refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.’ ⁸ Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, ^(E)‘I do not wish to take her,’ ⁹ then his brother's wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and ^(F)pull his sandal off his foot and ^(G)spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not ^(H)build up his brother's house.’ ¹⁰ And the name of his house^[a] shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’

¹¹ But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb ^(A)that they may become your husbands?

^16 (A)You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother's wife; it is your brother's nakedness.

⁸ And ^(A)every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the people of Israel shall be wife to one of the clan of the tribe of her father, so that every one of the people of Israel may possess the inheritance of his fathers. ⁹ So no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another, for each of the tribes of the people of Israel shall hold on to its own inheritance.’”
