¹⁸ He said, “What pledge should I give you?”

“Your seal^(A) and its cord, and the staff^(B) in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.^(C)

²⁵ As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”^(A)

²⁶ Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I,^(B) since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.^(C)” And he did not sleep with her again.

²² “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe^(A) and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger^(B) and sandals on his feet.

²⁴ “As surely as I live,” declares the Lord, “even if you, Jehoiachin^[a](A) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring^(B) on my right hand, I would still pull you off.
