²³ So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe^(A) he was wearing—

²⁸ They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,^(A)

²¹ They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother.^(A) We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress^(B) has come on us.”

³¹ Then they got Joseph’s robe,^(A) slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.^{(B) 32} They took the ornate robe^(C) back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

³³ He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal^(D) has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”^(E)

³ Now Israel^(A) loved Joseph more than any of his other sons,^(B) because he had been born to him in his old age;^(C) and he made an ornate^[a] robe^(D) for him.^(E)
