Joseph Dreams of Greatness

37 Now Jacob dwelt in the land ^(A)where his father was a ^[a]stranger, in the land of Canaan.

⁸ Also ^(A)I give to you and your descendants after you the land ^(B)in^[a] which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and ^(C)I will be their God.”

^4 (A)“I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. ^(B)Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

⁹ By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, ^(A)dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, ^(B)the heirs with him of the same promise; ¹⁰ for he waited for ^(C)the city which has foundations, ^(D)whose builder and maker is God.

¹¹ By faith ^(E)Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and ^(F)she^[a] bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him ^(G)faithful who had promised. ¹² Therefore from one man, and him as good as ^(H)dead, were born as many as the ^(I)stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

The Heavenly Hope

¹³ These all died in faith, ^(J)not having received the ^(K)promises, but ^(L)having seen them afar off ^[b]were assured of them, embraced them and ^(M)confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. ¹⁴ For those who say such things ^(N)declare plainly that they seek a homeland. ¹⁵ And truly if they had called to mind ^(O)that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. ¹⁶ But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed ^(P)to be called their God, for He has ^(Q)prepared a city for them.

^7 (A)For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and ^(B)the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock.
