⁶ Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz^(A) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.^(B)

¹⁹ He called that place Bethel,^[a](A) though the city used to be called Luz.^(B)

²² and^[a] this stone that I have set up as a pillar^(A) will be God’s house,^(B) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.^(C)”

⁸ From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel^(A) and pitched his tent,^(B) with Bethel on the west and Ai^(C) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.^(D)

²² Now the tribes of Joseph^(A) attacked Bethel,^(B) and the Lord was with them. ²³ When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),^{(C) 24} the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.^(D)” ²⁵ So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared^(E) the man and his whole family. ²⁶ He then went to the land of the Hittites,^(F) where he built a city and called it Luz,^(G) which is its name to this day.

³ Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[a](A) appeared to me at Luz^(B) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me^(C)
