²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled.

¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁶ The remainder of the Jews in the king’s provinces ^(A)gathered together and protected their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of their enemies; ^(B)but they did not lay a hand on the plunder.

¹³ Get up, ^(A)sanctify^[a] the people, and say, ^(B)‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.”

7 But the children of Israel ^[a]committed a ^(A)trespass regarding the ^(B)accursed^[b] things, for ^(C)Achan the son of Carmi, the son of ^[c]Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.

¹⁴ Then he said, ^(A)“Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”

So Moses ^(B)feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!”

³¹ But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”

² And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he ^(A)took her and lay with her, and violated her.
