²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city^(A) where^[a] their sister had been defiled.^(B)

¹⁰ For the love of money^(A) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith^(B) and pierced themselves with many griefs.^(C)

¹⁶ Meanwhile, the remainder of the Jews who were in the king’s provinces also assembled to protect themselves and get relief^(A) from their enemies.^(B) They killed seventy-five thousand of them^(C) but did not lay their hands on the plunder.^(D)

¹⁰ the ten sons^(A) of Haman son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews.^(B) But they did not lay their hands on the plunder.^(C)

²¹ When I saw in the plunder^(A) a beautiful robe from Babylonia,^[a] two hundred shekels^[b] of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,^[c] I coveted^(B) them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

¹³ “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves^(A) in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

Achan’s Sin

7 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things^[a];^(A) Achan^(B) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,^[b] the son of Zerah,^(C) of the tribe of Judah,^(D) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned^(E) against Israel.^(F)

¹⁴ The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?^(A) Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

³¹ But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?^(A)”
