¹² Ask me ever so much ^(A)dowry^[a] and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”

Moral and Ceremonial Principles

^16 (A)“If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife. ¹⁷ If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the ^(B)bride-price of virgins.

¹⁷ And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”

¹⁴ So David sent messengers to ^(A)Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself ^(B)for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.”

²⁵ Then Saul said, “Thus you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any ^(A)dowry but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take ^(B)vengeance on the king’s enemies.’ ” But Saul ^(C)thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. ²⁶ So when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to become the king’s son-in-law. Now ^(D)the days had not expired; ²⁷ therefore David arose and went, he and ^(E)his men, and killed two hundred men of the Philistines. And ^(F)David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full count to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as a wife.

^28 (A)“If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, ²⁹ then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father ^(B)fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife ^(C)because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days.

⁴¹ Thus I have been in your house twenty years; I ^(A)served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and ^(B)you have changed my wages ten times.

¹⁸ Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, ^(A)“I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.”

⁵³ Then the servant brought out ^(A)jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave ^(B)precious things to her brother and to her mother.

² So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver, and one and one-half homers of barley.
