²⁵ Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead^(A) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too.

⁹ By faith he made his home in the promised land^(A) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,^(B) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.^(C)

¹⁸ After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,^[a](A) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem^(B) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.

⁸ From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel^(A) and pitched his tent,^(B) with Bethel on the west and Ai^(C) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.^(D)
