Jacob’s Flocks Increase

²⁵ After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way^(A) so I can go back to my own homeland.^(B)

⁵⁴ Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.

When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way^(A) to my master.”

⁵⁶ But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success^(A) to my journey. Send me on my way^(B) so I may go to my master.”

⁴ “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.^{(A) 5} He gave him no inheritance here,^(B) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,^(C) even though at that time Abraham had no child.

⁵⁵ Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters^(A) and blessed^(B) them. Then he left and returned home.^[a](C)

¹³ I am the God of Bethel,^(A) where you anointed a pillar^(B) and where you made a vow^(C) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.^(D)’”

¹⁵ I am with you^(A) and will watch over you^(B) wherever you go,^(C) and I will bring you back to this land.^(D) I will not leave you^(E) until I have done what I have promised you.^(F)”^(G)

¹³ There above it^[a] stood the Lord,^(A) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.^(B) I will give you and your descendants the land^(C) on which you are lying.^(D)

³ Stay in this land for a while,^(A) and I will be with you^(B) and will bless you.^(C) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands^(D) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.^(E)
