³¹ When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,^(A) he enabled her to conceive,^(B) but Rachel remained childless.

³⁷ “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.^(A)

The Right of the Firstborn

¹⁵ If a man has two wives,^(A) and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love,^(B)

²¹ And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;^(A) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew^(B) up in the presence of the Lord.

²² Then God remembered Rachel;^(A) he listened to her^(B) and enabled her to conceive.^(C)

²⁵ Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it^(A) for eternal life.^(B)

²⁶ “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.^(A)

²⁴ “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.^(A)

³ but Esau I have hated,^(A) and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland^(B) and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.^(C)”
