Jacob's Children

³¹ When the Lord saw that Leah was ^(A)hated, ^(B)he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

^37 (A)Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

^21 (A)Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. ^(B)And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord.

⁵ But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.^[a]

² There was a certain man of ^(A)Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. ^(B)And his wife was barren and had no children. ^3 (C)And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold, you are barren and have not borne children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

¹⁵ “If a man has two wives, ^(A)the one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne him children, and if the firstborn son belongs to the unloved,^[a]

⁷ Then the Lord said, ^(A)“I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their ^(B)taskmasters. I know their sufferings,

30 When Rachel saw that ^(A)she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I shall die!” ² Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, ^(B)who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”

³⁰ So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served Laban ^(A)for another seven years.
