Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

29 Then Jacob went on his journey and came to ^(A)the land of the people of the east. ² As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well's mouth was large, ³ and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well.

⁴ Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where do you come from?” They said, ^(B)“We are from Haran.” ⁵ He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.” ⁶ He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well; and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep!” ⁷ He said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered together. Water the sheep and go, pasture them.” ⁸ But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.”

⁹ While he was still speaking with them, ^(C)Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess. ¹⁰ Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. ¹¹ Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud. ¹² And Jacob told Rachel that he was ^(D)her father's kinsman, and that he was Rebekah's son, ^(E)and she ran and told her father.

¹³ As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, ^(F)he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things, ¹⁴ and Laban said to him, ^(G)“Surely you are my bone and my flesh!” And he stayed with him a month.

Tola and Jair

10 After Abimelech there arose to ^(A)save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in ^(B)the hill country of Ephraim. ² And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir.

³ After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. ⁴ And he had thirty sons who ^(C)rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, ^(D)which are in the land of Gilead. ⁵ And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

Further Disobedience and Oppression

^6 (E)The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord ^(F)and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, ^(G)the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they ^(H)forsook the Lord and did not serve him. ⁷ So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and ^(I)he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, ⁸ and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. ⁹ And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed.

¹⁰ And the people of Israel ^(J)cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because ^(K)we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” ¹¹ And the Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you ^(L)from the Egyptians and ^(M)from the Amorites, ^(N)from the Ammonites and ^(O)from the Philistines? ¹² The Sidonians also, and ^(P)the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, and you cried out to me, and I ^(Q)saved you out of their hand. ¹³ Yet you have ^(R)forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more. ¹⁴ Go and cry out ^(S)to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” ¹⁵ And the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you. Only please deliver us this day.” ¹⁶ So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and ^(T)he became impatient over the misery of Israel.

¹⁷ Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead. And the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at ^(U)Mizpah. ¹⁸ And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? ^(V)He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

^21 (U)Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.” ²² Hezekiah also had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the Lord?”

Envoys from Babylon

39 ^(V)At that time Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, ^(W)sent envoys with letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick and had recovered. ² And Hezekiah welcomed them gladly. And he showed them his treasure house, ^(X)the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his whole armory, all that was found in his storehouses. ^(Y)There was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them. ³ Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? And from where did they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “They have come to me from a far country, from Babylon.” ⁴ He said, “What have they seen in your house?” Hezekiah answered, “They have seen all that is in my house. There is nothing in my storehouses that I did not show them.”

⁵ Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord of hosts: ^6 (Z)Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the Lord. ^7 (AA)And some of your own sons, who will come from you, whom you will father, shall be taken away, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” ⁸ Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good.” For he thought, ^(AB)“There will be peace and security in my days.”

Jesus Heals Many

^29 (A)Jesus went on from there and walked ^(B)beside the Sea of Galilee. And he ^(C)went up on the mountain and sat down there. ³⁰ And great crowds came to him, bringing with them ^(D)the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, ^31 (E)so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, ^(F)the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And ^(G)they glorified ^(H)the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

^32 (I)Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ^(J)“I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” ³³ And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” ³⁴ And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, ^(K)“Seven, and a few small fish.” ³⁵ And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, ³⁶ he took the seven loaves and the fish, and ^(L)having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. ³⁷ And ^(M)they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. ³⁸ Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. ³⁹ And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of ^(N)Magadan.

The Macedonian Call

⁶ And ^(A)they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. ⁷ And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but ^(B)the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. ⁸ So, passing by Mysia, they went down ^(C)to Troas. ⁹ And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” ¹⁰ And when Paul^[a] had seen the vision, immediately ^(D)we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

The Conversion of Lydia

¹¹ So, setting sail from Troas, we ^(E)made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, ¹² and from there to ^(F)Philippi, which is a leading city of the^[b] district of Macedonia and ^(G)a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. ¹³ And ^(H)on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate ^(I)to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we ^(J)sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. ¹⁴ One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, ^(K)who was a worshiper of God. The Lord ^(L)opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. ¹⁵ And after she was baptized, ^(M)and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she ^(N)prevailed upon us.
