²² and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, ^(A)shall be God's house. And ^(B)of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”

⁷ and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel,^[a] because ^(A)there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother.

And Abram gave him ^(A)a tenth of everything.

Tithes

^22 (A)“You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. ²³ And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, ^(B)you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, ^(C)and the firstborn of your herd and flock, ^(D)that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.

^30 (A)“Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord. ³¹ If a man wishes to redeem some of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. ³² And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that ^(B)pass under the herdsman's staff, shall be holy to the Lord. ³³ One shall not differentiate between good or bad, ^(C)neither shall he make a substitute for it; and if he does substitute for it, then both it and the substitute shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.”

God Blesses and Renames Jacob

35 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to ^(A)Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you ^(B)when you fled from your brother Esau.”

¹⁴ And Jacob ^(A)set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. ¹⁵ So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him ^(B)Bethel.

²⁰ There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.^[a]

¹⁷ And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

³³ Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and ^(A)called there on the name of the Lord, ^(B)the Everlasting God.
