¹⁹ He called that place Bethel,^[a] but the name of the city was Luz at the first.^(A)

³ And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and he blessed me^(A)

Jacob Returns to Bethel

35 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”^(A)

²⁹ He set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.^(A)

²² The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them. ²³ The house of Joseph sent out spies to Bethel (the name of the city was formerly Luz).^{(A) 24} When the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.” ²⁵ So he showed them the way into the city, and they put the city to the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.^{(B) 26} So the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and named it Luz; that is its name to this day.

⁸ From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord.^(A)
