³⁵ But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully^(A) and took your blessing.”^(B)

⁶ and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.^[a](A) The Lord will punish^(B) all those who commit such sins,^(C) as we told you and warned you before.

⁷ But we have this treasure in jars of clay^(A) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God^(B) and not from us.

⁷ Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory,^(A) why am I still condemned as a sinner?”^{(B) 8} Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”?^(C) Their condemnation is just!

Breaking Covenant Through Divorce

¹⁰ Do we not all have one Father^[a]?^(A) Did not one God create us?^(B) Why do we profane the covenant^(C) of our ancestors by being unfaithful^(D) to one another?

¹⁹ Now summon^(A) all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.

¹⁹ Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.^(A) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,^(B) so that you may give me your blessing.”^(C)

²⁰ Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,^(D)” he replied.

²¹ Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,^(E) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

²² Jacob went close to his father Isaac,^(F) who touched^(G) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” ²³ He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;^(H) so he proceeded to bless him.
