³¹ Then they arose early in the morning and ^(A)swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

¹⁶ For men indeed swear by the greater, and ^(A)an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.

¹⁵ And David said to him, “Can you take me down to this troop?”

So he said, “Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my ^(A)master, and I will take you down to this troop.”

¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the ^[a]house of David, saying, ^(A)“Let the Lord require it at the hand of David’s enemies.”

¹⁷ Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; ^(B)for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

⁴⁴ Now therefore, come, ^(A)let us make a ^[a]covenant, ^(B)you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”

³³ Then Jacob said, ^[a]“Swear to me as of this day.”

So he swore to him, and ^(A)sold his birthright to Jacob.

³¹ Therefore he ^(A)called that place ^[a]Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.

³² Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba. So Abimelech rose with Phichol, the commander of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.

³ Then David took an oath again, and said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But ^(A)truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”

Saul’s Rash Oath

²⁴ And the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had ^(A)placed the people under oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

⁵⁵ And early in the morning Laban arose, and ^(A)kissed his sons and daughters and ^(B)blessed them. Then Laban departed and ^(C)returned to his place.
