²⁰ So the field and the cave in it were deeded^(A) to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.^(B)

¹⁰ I signed and sealed the deed,^(A) had it witnessed,^(B) and weighed out the silver on the scales. ¹¹ I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— ¹² and I gave this deed to Baruch^(C) son of Neriah,^(D) the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

¹³ “In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions: ¹⁴ ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents, both the sealed^(E) and unsealed copies of the deed of purchase, and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.

⁷ (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption^(A) and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal^(B) and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions^(C) in Israel.)^(D)

⁸ So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.^(E)

⁹ Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses^(F) that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. ¹⁰ I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite,^(G) Mahlon’s widow, as my wife,^(H) in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown.^(I) Today you are witnesses!^(J)”

¹⁸ Manasseh rested with his ancestors and was buried in his palace garden,^(A) the garden of Uzza. And Amon his son succeeded him as king.

²⁴ But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”^(A)

So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels^[a](B) of silver for them.

²⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.^(A) But God will surely come to your aid^(B) and take you up out of this land to the land^(C) he promised on oath to Abraham,^(D) Isaac^(E) and Jacob.”^{(F) 25} And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath^(G) and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones^(H) up from this place.”^(I)

¹³ They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah,^(A) near Mamre,^(B) which Abraham had bought along with the field^(C) as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.^(D)

⁵ ‘My father made me swear an oath^(A) and said, “I am about to die;^(B) bury me in the tomb I dug for myself^(C) in the land of Canaan.”^(D) Now let me go up and bury my father;^(E) then I will return.’”

³¹ There Abraham^(A) and his wife Sarah^(B) were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah^(C) were buried, and there I buried Leah.^{(D) 32} The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.^[a](E)”
