¹⁴ So Abraham called that place “The Lord will provide,”^[a] as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”^[b]

¹³ And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

¹⁵ And Moses built an altar and called it, The Lord is my banner.

⁸ Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them walked on together.

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, “The Lord is peace.” To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.

¹³ So she named the Lord who spoke to her, “You are El-roi,”^[a] for she said, “Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?”^{[b](A) 14} Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi;^[c] it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

¹⁹ He called that place Bethel,^[a] but the name of the city was Luz at the first.^(A)

⁸ We do not want you to be ignorant, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we experienced in Asia, for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself.^{(A) 9} Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. ¹⁰ He who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us;^[a] on him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again,^(B)

¹² Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah^[a] and named it Ebenezer,^[b] for he said, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”^(A)
