¹⁰ and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman^(A) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”^(B)

¹⁹ They went out from us,^(A) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.^(B)

²² For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman^(A) and the other by the free woman.^{(B) 23} His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh,^(C) but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.^(D)

²⁴ These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. ²⁵ Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. ²⁶ But the Jerusalem that is above^(E) is free, and she is our mother. ²⁷ For it is written:

²⁸ Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.^{(G) 29} At that time the son born according to the flesh^(H) persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit.^(I) It is the same now. ³⁰ But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”^{[b](J) 31} Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman,^(K) but of the free woman.^(L)

³⁵ Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.^(A)

⁴ and into an inheritance^(A) that can never perish, spoil or fade.^(B) This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,^(C)

⁷ So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.^(A)

¹⁸ For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise;^(A) but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.

¹³ “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’^(A)

¹¹ I say to you that many will come from the east and the west,^(A) and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.^{(B) 12} But the subjects of the kingdom^(C) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”^(D)
