¹⁶ To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given ^(A)your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is ^(B)a sign of your innocence in the eyes of all^[a] who are with you, and before everyone you are vindicated.”

⁵ Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.”

⁶⁵ and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself.

So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem. ⁵ And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were ^(A)1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah ^(B)470,000 who drew the sword. ^6 (C)But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab.
