When no (A)bush of the field[a] was yet in the land[b] and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man (B)to work the ground, and a mist[c] was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— then the Lord God formed the man of (C)dust from the ground and (D)breathed into his (E)nostrils the breath of life, and (F)the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a (G)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (H)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, (I)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

  3. Genesis 2:6 Or spring

15 The Lord God took the man (A)and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (B)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat[a] of it you (C)shall surely die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; (D)I will make him a helper fit for[b] him.” 19 (E)Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[c] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and (F)brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[d] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (G)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[e] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is (H)bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was (I)taken out of Man.”[f]

24 (J)Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

How Majestic Is Your Name

To the choirmaster: according to The (A)Gittith.[a] A Psalm of David.

O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your (B)name in all the earth!
You have set your (C)glory above the heavens.
    (D)Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established (E)strength because of your foes,
    to still (F)the enemy and the avenger.
When I (G)look at your heavens, the work of your (H)fingers,
    the moon and the stars, (I)which you have set in place,
(J)what is man that you are (K)mindful of him,
    and (L)the son of man that you (M)care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than (N)the heavenly beings[b]
    and crowned him with (O)glory and honour.
You have given him (P)dominion over the works of your hands;
    (Q)you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
    and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
    whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Walk by the Spirit

16 But I say, (A)walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify (B)the desires of the flesh. 17 For (C)the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, (D)to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are (E)led by the Spirit, (F)you are not under the law. 19 Now (G)the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, (H)divisions, 21 envy,[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that (I)those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But (J)the fruit of the Spirit is (K)love, joy, peace, patience, (L)kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 (M)gentleness, (N)self-control; (O)against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (P)have crucified the flesh with its (Q)passions and desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, (R)let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 (S)Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth, (A)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 (B)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 (C)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so (D)that they may see your good works and (E)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
