⁵ before any ^(A)plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not ^(B)caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man ^(C)to till the ground;

²³ therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden ^(A)to till the ground from which he was taken.

⁷ For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, ^(A)receives blessing from God;

¹² When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

² Then she bore again, this time his brother ^[a]Abel. Now ^(A)Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

¹¹ Then God said, “Let the earth ^(A)bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the ^(B)fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. ¹² And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
