⁵ Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth^[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,^(A) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth^(B) and there was no one to work the ground,

²³ So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden^(A) to work the ground^(B) from which he had been taken.

⁷ Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.

¹² When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.^(A) You will be a restless wanderer^(B) on the earth.^(C)”

² Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.^(A)

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.^(B)
