⁷ Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it.

³⁰ But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!’^(A)

²⁷ He replied, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf because he has got him back safe and sound.’

²³ And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate,

⁴ Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’^(A)

¹⁴ Cursed be the cheat who has a male in the flock and vows to give it and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished, for I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name is reverenced among the nations.^(A)

¹⁵ Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Allow us to detain you and prepare a kid for you.”^{(A) 16} The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat your food, but if you want to prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.)^(B)

³ But he urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house, and he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.^(A)
