² And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children^[a] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

⁴ If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone.

¹⁰ The Lord said, “I will surely return to you ^(A)about this time next year, and ^(B)Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.

¹⁷ And to Adam he said,

¹¹ Then all the people who were ^(A)at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, ^(B)who together ^(C)built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in ^(D)Ephrathah and ^(E)be renowned in Bethlehem,

²² Then God ^(A)remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and ^(B)opened her womb.

⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and ^(A)gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ Then Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

² Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, ^(A)who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?” ³ Then she said, “Here is my servant ^(B)Bilhah; go in to her, so that she may give birth ^(C)on my behalf,^[a] that even I may have children^[b] through her.” ⁴ So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her.
