Hagar and Ishmael

16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, ^(A)had borne him no children. And she had ^(B)an Egyptian maidservant whose name was ^(C)Hagar.

²⁴ which things are symbolic. For these are ^[a]the two covenants: the one from Mount ^(A)Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—

¹⁶ He ^(A)treated Abram well for her sake. He ^(B)had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

⁹ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar ^(A)the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, ^(B)scoffing.^{[a] 10} Therefore she said to Abraham, ^(C)“Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.”

^2 (A)But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, ^(B)seeing I ^[a]go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” ³ Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed ^(C)one^[b] born in my house is my heir!”

³⁶ Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

⁷ But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

² Now there was a certain man from ^(A)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children.

²¹ Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; ^(A)and the Lord granted his plea, ^(B)and Rebekah his wife conceived.

²¹ He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother ^(A)took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
