Jesus Heals Two Men

²⁸ When he came to the other side, to the region of the Gadarenes,^[a] two men possessed by demons came out of the tombs and met him. They were so fierce that no one could pass that way.

A Chosen People

7 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter and occupy and he clears away many nations before you—the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you^(A)—

¹¹ “Observe what I command you today. See, I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.^(A)

² I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.^(A)

²³ “When my angel goes in front of you and brings you to the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and I blot them out,^{(A) 24} you shall not bow down to their gods or serve them or follow their practices, but you shall utterly demolish them and break their pillars in pieces.^{(B) 25} You shall serve the Lord your God, and I^[a] will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you.^{(C) 26} No one shall miscarry or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.^{(D) 27} I will send my terror in front of you and will throw into confusion all the people against whom you shall come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you. ²⁸ And I will send swarms of hornets^[b] in front of you, which shall drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites from before you.^(E)

¹⁵ Canaan became the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth^{(A) 16} and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, ¹⁷ the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, ¹⁸ the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.^{(B) 19} And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim as far as Lasha.^(C)
