⁷ And there was ^(A)strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. ^(B)The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.

²⁰ But the herdsmen of Gerar ^(A)quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well ^[a]Esek, because they quarreled with him.

⁶ Abram ^(A)passed through the land to the place of Shechem, ^(B)as far as ^[a]the terebinth tree of Moreh. ^(C)And the Canaanites were then in the land.

¹⁶ For ^(A)where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

^12 (A)having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, ^(B)they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Pride Promotes Strife

4 Where do ^[a]wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure ^(A)that war in your members?

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

³⁰ Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, ^(A)“You have ^(B)troubled me ^(C)by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; ^(D)and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”

³ For ^(A)we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.

^12 (A)that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.
