From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel(A) and pitched his tent,(B) with Bethel on the west and Ai(C) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.(D)

From the Negev(A) he went from place to place until he came to Bethel,(B) to the place between Bethel and Ai(C) where his tent had been earlier and where he had first built an altar.(D) There Abram called on the name of the Lord.(E)

Now Lot,(F) who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.(G) And quarreling(H) arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites(I) and Perizzites(J) were also living in the land(K) at that time.

So Abram said to Lot,(L) “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me,(M) or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.(N) Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”(O)

10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain(P) of the Jordan toward Zoar(Q) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,(R) like the land of Egypt.(S) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom(T) and Gomorrah.)(U)
