² As people moved eastward,^[a] they found a plain in Shinar^[b](A) and settled there.

¹⁰ The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon,^(A) Uruk,^(B) Akkad and Kalneh,^(C) in^[a] Shinar.^[b](D)

² And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried^(A) off to the temple of his god in Babylonia^[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.^(B)

Abram Rescues Lot

14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,^[a](A) Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer^(B) king of Elam^(C) and Tidal king of Goyim,

¹¹ He replied, “To the country of Babylonia^[a](A) to build a house^(B) for it. When the house is ready, the basket will be set there in its place.”^(C)

¹¹ In that day^(A) the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant^(B) of his people from Assyria,^(C) from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt,^(D) from Cush,^[a](E) from Elam,^(F) from Babylonia,^[b] from Hamath^(G) and from the islands^(H) of the Mediterranean.^(I)

¹¹ So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:

⁹ That is why it was called Babel^[a](A)—because there the Lord confused the language^(B) of the whole world.^(C) From there the Lord scattered^(D) them over the face of the whole earth.
