50 Joseph se jeta sur le visage de son père, pleura sur lui, et le baisa. 2 Il ordonna aux médecins à son service d’embaumer son père, et les médecins embaumèrent Israël. 3 Quarante jours s’écoulèrent ainsi, et furent employés à l’embaumer. Et les Egyptiens le pleurèrent soixante-dix jours.
4 Quand les jours du deuil furent passés, Joseph s’adressa aux gens de la maison de Pharaon, et leur dit: Si j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, rapportez, je vous prie, à Pharaon ce que je vous dis. 5 Mon père m’a fait jurer, en disant: Voici, je vais mourir! Tu m’enterreras dans le sépulcre que je me suis acheté au pays de Canaan. Je voudrais donc y monter, pour enterrer mon père; et je reviendrai. 6 Pharaon répondit: Monte, et enterre ton père, comme il te l’a fait jurer.
7 Joseph monta, pour enterrer son père. Avec lui montèrent tous les serviteurs de Pharaon, anciens de sa maison, tous les anciens du pays d’Egypte, 8 toute la maison de Joseph, ses frères, et la maison de son père: on ne laissa dans le pays de Gosen que les enfants, les brebis et les bœufs. 9 Il y avait encore avec Joseph des chars et des cavaliers, en sorte que le cortège était très nombreux. 10 Arrivés à l’aire d’Athad, qui est au-delà du Jourdain, ils firent entendre de grandes et profondes lamentations; et Joseph fit en l’honneur de son père un deuil de sept jours. 11 Les habitants du pays, les Cananéens, furent témoins de ce deuil dans l’aire d’Athad, et ils dirent: Voilà un grand deuil parmi les Egyptiens! C’est pourquoi l’on a donné le nom d’Abel-Mitsraïm[a] à cette aire qui est au-delà du Jourdain. 12 C’est ainsi que les fils de Jacob exécutèrent les ordres de leur père. 13 Ils le transportèrent au pays de Canaan, et l’enterrèrent dans la caverne du champ de Macpéla, qu’Abraham avait achetée d’Ephron, le Héthien, comme propriété sépulcrale, et qui est vis-à-vis de Mamré. 14 Joseph, après avoir enterré son père, retourna en Egypte, avec ses frères et tous ceux qui étaient montés avec lui pour enterrer son père.
15 Quand les frères de Joseph virent que leur père était mort, ils dirent: Si Joseph nous prenait en haine, et nous rendait tout le mal que nous lui avons fait! 16 Et ils firent dire à Joseph: Ton père a donné cet ordre avant de mourir: 17 Vous parlerez ainsi à Joseph: Oh! pardonne le crime de tes frères et leur péché, car ils t’ont fait du mal! Pardonne maintenant le péché des serviteurs du Dieu de ton père! Joseph pleura en entendant ces paroles. 18 Ses frères vinrent eux-mêmes se prosterner devant lui, et ils dirent: Nous sommes tes serviteurs. 19 Joseph leur dit: Soyez sans crainte; car suis-je à la place de Dieu? 20 Vous aviez médité de me faire du mal: Dieu l’a changé en bien, pour accomplir ce qui arrive aujourd’hui, pour sauver la vie à un peuple nombreux. 21 Soyez donc sans crainte; je vous entretiendrai, vous et vos enfants. Et il les consola, en parlant à leur cœur.
Les derniers jours de Joseph; sa mort
22 Joseph demeura en Egypte, lui et la maison de son père. Il vécut cent dix ans. 23 Joseph vit les fils d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la troisième génération; et les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, naquirent sur ses genoux. 24 Joseph dit à ses frères: Je vais mourir! Mais Dieu vous visitera, et il vous fera remonter de ce pays-ci dans le pays qu’il a juré de donner à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob. 25 Joseph fit jurer les fils d’Israël, en disant: Dieu vous visitera; et vous ferez remonter mes os loin d’ici. 26 Joseph mourut, âgé de cent dix ans. On l’embauma, et on le mit dans un cercueil en Egypte.

Egiptenii l-au jelit şaptezeci de zile. 4 După ce au trecut zilele de jale, Iosif le-a zis celor de la curtea lui Faraon: „Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la voi, vorbiţi-i lui Faraon astfel: 5 «Tatăl meu m-a pus să jur cerându-mi ca, atunci când va muri, să-l îngrop în mormântul pe care şi l-a săpat în Canaan. De aceea dă-mi voie să mă duc să-l îngrop acolo pe tatăl meu, după care mă voi întoarce.»“ 6 Faraon a răspuns: „Du-te şi îngroapă-l pe tatăl tău, aşa cum te-a pus să juri.“ 7 Iosif s-a dus să-şi îngroape tatăl şi împreună cu el au mers toţi slujitorii lui Faraon, sfetnicii săi şi toţi bătrânii ţării Egiptului, 8 toată familia lui Iosif, fraţii săi şi familia tatălui său. Doar copiii, turmele şi cirezile lor au rămas în Goşen[a]. 9 Împreună cu el au mers care şi călăreţi, formând o mulţime foarte mare. 10 Când au ajuns la Aria lui Atad[b], care se află dincolo de Iordan, au ţinut acolo un bocet mare şi solemn. Iosif a ţinut un bocet de şapte zile pentru tatăl său. 11 Când locuitorii din Canaan au văzut bocetul din Aria lui Atad, au zis: „Acesta este un mare bocet al egiptenilor.“ De aceea acel loc a fost numit Abel-Miţrayim[c]; el se află dincolo de Iordan. 12 Astfel, fiii lui Iacov au făcut pentru el aşa cum le-a poruncit acesta. 13 Ei l-au dus în Canaan şi l-au îngropat în peştera din ogorul Mahpela, la răsărit de Mamre, pe care Avraam a cumpărat-o de la hititul Efron, împreună cu ogorul, ca teren pentru înmormântare. 14 După ce l-a îngropat pe tatăl său, Iosif s-a întors în Egipt, împreună cu fraţii săi şi cu toţi cei care se duseseră cu el să-şi îngroape tatăl.
Bunătatea lui Iosif faţă de fraţii săi
15 Când fraţii lui Iosif au văzut că tatăl lor murise, s-au gândit că poate Iosif îi va urî şi se va răzbuna pentru tot răul pe care i l-au făcut. 16 De aceea ei au trimis să-i spună lui Iosif că, înainte să moară, tatăl lui i-ar fi dat următoarea poruncă: 17 „Iosife, te rog, iartă nelegiuirea şi păcatul fraţilor tăi, pentru că ei ţi-au făcut rău. Iartă, te rog, nelegiuirea slujitorilor Dumnezeului tatălui tău.“ Iosif a plâns când i s-au spus aceste lucruri. 18 Fraţii lui au venit, s-au plecat înaintea lui şi i-au zis:
– Suntem sclavii tăi.
19 – Nu vă temeţi! le-a răspuns Iosif. Sunt eu în locul lui Dumnezeu? 20 Chiar dacă voi aţi intenţionat să-mi faceţi rău, Dumnezeu a schimbat răul în bine pentru a susţine viaţa unui popor numeros, aşa cum face astăzi. 21 Deci nu vă temeţi! Eu însumi mă voi îngriji de hrana voastră şi a copiilor voştri.
Apoi i-a mângâiat şi le-a vorbit cu bunătate.
Moartea lui Iosif
22 Iosif a locuit în Egipt împreună cu familia tatălui său; el a trăit o sută zece ani. 23 Iosif i-a văzut pe copiii lui Efraim până la a treia generaţie, iar copiii lui Machir, fiul lui Manase, au fost născuţi pe genunchii săi[d]. 24 Apoi Iosif le-a zis fraţilor săi: „Eu voi muri, dar Dumnezeu va veni în ajutorul vostru şi vă va duce din această ţară în ţara pe care le-a jurat-o lui Avraam, lui Isaac şi lui Iacov.“ 25 Iosif i-a pus pe fiii lui Israel să jure: „Când Dumnezeu va veni în ajutorul vostru, să luaţi oasele mele de aici.“ 26 Iosif a murit la vârsta de o sută zece ani. După ce l-au îmbălsămat, l-au pus într-un sicriu, în Egipt.

50 Joseph put his face against his father’s face, wept over him, and kissed him. 2 Joseph commanded the physicians who served him to embalm his father, so the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 Forty days were set aside for him, for that is how many days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians mourned for him for seventy days.
4 When the days of mourning for Jacob were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh. He said, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak directly to Pharaoh for me and say 5 that my father made me take an oath. He said to me, ‘Look, I am dying. Bury me in my tomb that I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.’ Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will return here again.”
6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do.”
7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and all the officials of Pharaoh went up with him: the senior officials of Pharaoh’s household, all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen. 9 Both chariots and horsemen went up with him. It was a very great entourage.
10 They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is on the other side of the Jordan, and there they mourned with a very loud and bitter lament. Joseph mourned for his father seven days. 11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, witnessed the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a very solemn mourning by the Egyptians.” That is why they named the place Abel Mizraim.[a] It is beyond the Jordan. 12 His sons did for him just what he commanded them to do: 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, which Abraham had purchased along with the field. He purchased it from Ephron the Hittite, as a piece of property for a burial site near Mamre. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt—he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
Joseph and His Brothers
15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and will pay us back in full for all of the evil that we did to him.”
16 They sent the following message to Joseph: “Before he died your father commanded us, 17 ‘You are to tell Joseph, “Please forgive the offense of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the offense of the servants of the God of your father.”
Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
18 His brothers also came and fell down in front of him, and they said, “See now, we are your servants.”
19 Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? 20 You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring this to pass and to keep many people alive, as it is this day. 21 Now therefore, do not be afraid. I will nourish you and your little ones.” He comforted them and spoke to them in a kind way.
The Death of Joseph
22 Joseph lived in Egypt, he and his father’s household. Joseph lived one hundred ten years. 23 He saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children also of Makir, the son of Manasseh, were placed on Joseph’s knees when they were born. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 Joseph made the descendants of Israel swear an oath. He said, “God will surely visit you. Then you shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died when he was one hundred ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
