Jacob et sa famille en Egypte

46 Israël partit, avec tout ce qui lui appartenait. Il arriva à Beer-Schéba, et il offrit des sacrifices au Dieu de son père Isaac. Dieu parla à Israël dans une vision pendant la nuit, et il dit: Jacob! Jacob! Israël répondit: Me voici! Et Dieu dit: Je suis Dieu, le Dieu de ton père. Ne crains point de descendre en Egypte, car là je te ferai devenir une grande nation. Moi-même je descendrai avec toi en Egypte, et moi-même je t’en ferai remonter; et Joseph te fermera les yeux.

Jacob quitta Beer-Schéba; et les fils d’Israël mirent Jacob, leur père, avec leurs enfants et leurs femmes, sur les chars que Pharaon avait envoyés pour les transporter. Ils prirent aussi leurs troupeaux et les biens qu’ils avaient acquis dans le pays de Canaan. Et Jacob se rendit en Egypte, avec toute sa famille. Il emmena avec lui en Egypte ses fils et les fils de ses fils, ses filles et les filles de ses fils, et toute sa famille.

Voici les noms des fils d’Israël, qui vinrent en Egypte. Jacob et ses fils. Premier-né de Jacob: Ruben.

Fils de Ruben: Hénoc, Pallu, Hetsron et Carmi. 10 Fils de Siméon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin et Tsochar; et Saül, fils de la Cananéenne. 11 Fils de Lévi: Guerschon, Kehath et Merari. 12 Fils de Juda: Er, Onan, Schéla, Pérets et Zérach; mais Er et Onan moururent au pays de Canaan. Les fils de Pérets furent Hetsron et Hamul. 13 Fils d’Issacar: Thola, Puva, Job et Schimron. 14 Fils de Zabulon: Séred, Elon et Jahleel. 15 Ce sont là les fils que Léa enfanta à Jacob à Paddan-Aram, avec sa fille Dina. Ses fils et ses filles formaient en tout trente-trois personnes.

16 Fils de Gad: Tsiphjon, Haggi, Schuni, Etsbon, Eri, Arodi et Areéli. 17 Fils d’Aser: Jimna, Jischva, Jischvi et Beria; et Sérach, leur sœur. Et les fils de Beria: Héber et Malkiel.

18 Ce sont là les fils de Zilpa, que Laban avait donnée à Léa, sa fille; et elle les enfanta à Jacob. En tout, seize personnes.

19 Fils de Rachel, femme de Jacob: Joseph et Benjamin. 20 Il naquit à Joseph, au pays d’Egypte, Manassé et Ephraïm, que lui enfanta Asnath, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On. 21 Fils de Benjamin: Béla, Béker, Aschbel, Guéra, Naaman, Ehi, Rosch, Muppim, Huppim et Ard.

22 Ce sont là les fils de Rachel, qui naquirent à Jacob. En tout, quatorze personnes.

23 Fils de Dan: Huschim.

24 Fils de Nephthali: Jahtseel, Guni, Jetser et Schillem.

25 Ce sont là les fils de Bilha, que Laban avait donnée à Rachel, sa fille; et elle les enfanta à Jacob. En tout, sept personnes.

26 Les personnes qui vinrent avec Jacob en Egypte, et qui étaient issues de lui, étaient au nombre de soixante-six en tout, sans compter les femmes des fils de Jacob. 27 Et Joseph avait deux fils qui lui étaient nés en Egypte. Le total des personnes de la famille de Jacob qui vinrent en Egypte était de soixante-dix.

28 Jacob envoya Juda devant lui vers Joseph, pour l’informer qu’il se rendait en Gosen. 29 Joseph attela son char et y monta, pour aller en Gosen, à la rencontre d’Israël, son père. Dès qu’il le vit, il se jeta à son cou, et pleura longtemps sur son cou. 30 Israël dit à Joseph: Que je meure maintenant, puisque j’ai vu ton visage et que tu vis encore!

31 Joseph dit à ses frères et à la famille de son père: Je vais avertir Pharaon, et je lui dirai: Mes frères et la famille de mon père, qui étaient au pays de Canaan, sont arrivés auprès de moi. 32 Ces hommes sont bergers, car ils élèvent des troupeaux; ils ont amené leurs brebis et leurs bœufs, et tout ce qui leur appartient. 33 Et quand Pharaon vous appellera, et dira: 34 Quelle est votre occupation? vous répondrez: Tes serviteurs ont élevé des troupeaux, depuis notre jeunesse jusqu’à présent, nous et nos pères. De cette manière, vous habiterez dans le pays de Gosen, car tous les bergers sont en abomination aux Egyptiens.

Jacob Goes to Egypt

46 So Israel(A) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(B) he offered sacrifices(C) to the God of his father Isaac.(D)

And God spoke to Israel(E) in a vision at night(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,”(G) he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,”(H) he said. “Do not be afraid(I) to go down to Egypt,(J) for I will make you into a great nation(K) there.(L) I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(N)

Then Jacob left Beersheba,(O) and Israel’s(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(R) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(S) they had acquired(T) in Canaan. Jacob brought with him to Egypt(U) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(V)

These are the names of the sons of Israel(W) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:

Reuben the firstborn(X) of Jacob.

The sons of Reuben:(Y)

Hanok, Pallu,(Z) Hezron and Karmi.(AA)

10 The sons of Simeon:(AB)

Jemuel,(AC) Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar(AD) and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.

11 The sons of Levi:(AE)

Gershon,(AF) Kohath(AG) and Merari.(AH)

12 The sons of Judah:(AI)

Er,(AJ) Onan,(AK) Shelah, Perez(AL) and Zerah(AM) (but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan).(AN)

The sons of Perez:(AO)

Hezron and Hamul.(AP)

13 The sons of Issachar:(AQ)

Tola, Puah,[a](AR) Jashub[b](AS) and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun:(AT)

Sered, Elon and Jahleel.

15 These were the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram,[c](AU) besides his daughter Dinah.(AV) These sons and daughters of his were thirty-three in all.

16 The sons of Gad:(AW)

Zephon,[d](AX) Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher:(AY)

Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi and Beriah.

Their sister was Serah.

The sons of Beriah:

Heber and Malkiel.

18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(AZ) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(BA)—sixteen in all.

19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(BB)

Joseph and Benjamin.(BC) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(BD) and Ephraim(BE) were born to Joseph(BF) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[e](BG)

21 The sons of Benjamin:(BH)

Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(BI)

22 These were the sons of Rachel(BJ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.

23 The son of Dan:(BK)

Hushim.(BL)

24 The sons of Naphtali:(BM)

Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.

25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(BN) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(BO)—seven in all.

26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(BP) 27 With the two sons[f] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(BQ) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[g] in all.(BR)

28 Now Jacob sent Judah(BS) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(BT) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(BU) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(BV) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[h] and wept(BW) for a long time.(BX)

30 Israel(BY) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(BZ)

31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(CA) have come to me.(CB) 32 The men are shepherds;(CC) they tend livestock,(CD) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(CE) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(CF) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(CG) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(CH) Then you will be allowed to settle(CI) in the region of Goshen,(CJ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(CK)

46 And Israel went forth with all things that he had, and he came to the well of (the) oath (And Jacob went forth with all that he had, and he came to Beersheba); and when sacrifices were slain there to [the] God of his father Isaac,

he heard God by a vision in that night calling to him (he heard God in a vision that night calling to him), and saying to him, Jacob! Jacob! To whom he answered, Lo! I am present.

God said to him, I am the full strong God of thy father; do not thou dread, go down into Egypt, for I shall make thee there into a great folk; (And God said to him, I am the very strong God of thy father; do not thou fear, but go down to Egypt, for there I shall make thee into a great nation;)

I shall go down thither with thee, and I shall bring thee turning again from thence (and I shall bring thee back again from there), and Joseph shall set his hand on thine eyes.

Jacob rose from the well of (the) oath (And then Jacob set out from Beersheba), and his sons took him, with their little children, and (their) wives, in the wains which Pharaoh had sent to bear the eld man,

and all things which he wielded in the land of Canaan; and he came into Egypt with [all] his seed,

his sons, and their sons, and (all the) daughters, and all the generation(s) together.

Forsooth these be the names of the sons of Israel, that entered into Egypt; Jacob with his free children. The first begotten is Reuben; (And these be the names of the children of Israel who went to Egypt; that is, the names of Jacob and his sons. The first-born was Reuben;)

the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

10 The sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Saul, the son of a woman of Canaan (and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman).

11 The sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

12 The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah. Forsooth Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan; and the sons of Pharez were born, Hezron, and Hamul. (The sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zarah. And Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan; and the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.)

13 The sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron.

14 The sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.

15 These be the sons of Leah, which she childed (to Jacob) in Mesopotamia of Syria, with Dinah, her daughter; all the souls of his sons and (of his) daughters (by Leah), (were) three and thirty. (These be the sons of Leah, whom she bare for Jacob in Paddan-aram, besides their daughter Dinah; all of his sons and his daughter by Leah, were three and thirty.)

16 The sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah; and Serah, the sister of them (and their sister Serah). The sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel.

18 These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah, his daughter (whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah), and (through whom) Jacob begat these sixteen persons.

19 The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife, were Joseph and Benjamin.

20 And two sons were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath, [the] daughter of Potipherah, priest of Heliopolis, childed to him (bare for him).

21 The sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, and Ehi, and Rosh, and Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

22 These were the sons of Rachel, the which Jacob begat (whom Jacob begat through her); all the persons were fourteen.

23 The son of Dan; Hushim.

24 The sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter (whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel). And Jacob begat these (through Bilhah); all the souls were seven.

26 And all the men that entered with Jacob into Egypt, and went out of his thigh, without his sons’ wives, were sixty and six. (And so all those who went with Jacob to Egypt, and came out of his thigh, not including his sons’ wives, were sixty-six.)

27 Forsooth the sons of Joseph, that were born to him in the land of Egypt, were two men. (So) All the souls of the house of Jacob, that entered into Egypt, were seventy.

28 Forsooth Jacob sent Judah before him to Joseph, that he should tell to him, and he meet with them in Goshen. And when Jacob had come thither, (And Jacob sent Judah ahead, to tell Joseph to come and meet them in Goshen. And so when Jacob arrived there,)

29 Joseph went up in his chariot to meet his father at the same place (Joseph came up in his chariot, and met his father there). And he saw Jacob, and felled on his neck, and wept betwixt embracings.

30 And the father said to Joseph, Now I shall die joyful, for I have seen thy face, and I (shall) leave thee living.

31 And Joseph spake to his brethren, and to all his father’s house(hold), (and said,) I shall go up, and tell to Pharaoh, and I shall say to him, My brethren, and the house(hold) of my father, that were in the land of Canaan, be come to me,

32 and they be men keepers of sheep, and have busyness of flocks to be fed (and these men be shepherds, and herdsmen, and be busy to feed their flocks, and their herds); (and) they brought with them their sheep, and (their) great beasts, and all things which they might have.

33 And when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your work?

34 ye shall answer, We be thy servants, men shepherds (We, thy servants, be shepherds, and herdsmen), from our childhood till into this present time, both we and our fathers. Soothly ye shall say these things, (so) that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen, for Egyptians loathe all keepers of sheep.
