Départ de Jacob pour Canaan
31 Jacob entendit les propos des fils de Laban, qui disaient: Jacob a pris tout ce qui était à notre père, et c’est avec le bien de notre père qu’il s’est acquis toute cette richesse. 2 Jacob remarqua aussi le visage de Laban; et voici, il n’était plus envers lui comme auparavant.
3 Alors l’Eternel dit à Jacob: Retourne au pays de tes pères et dans ton lieu de naissance, et je serai avec toi. 4 Jacob fit appeler Rachel et Léa, qui étaient aux champs vers son troupeau. 5 Il leur dit: Je vois, au visage de votre père, qu’il n’est plus envers moi comme auparavant; mais le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi. 6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j’ai servi votre père de tout mon pouvoir. 7 Et votre père s’est joué de moi, et a changé dix fois mon salaire; mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me faire du mal. 8 Quand il disait: Les tachetés seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis faisaient des petits tachetés. Et quand il disait: Les rayés seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis faisaient des petits rayés. 9 Dieu a pris à votre père son troupeau, et me l’a donné. 10 Au temps où les brebis entraient en chaleur, je levai les yeux, et je vis en songe que les boucs qui couvraient les brebis étaient rayés, tachetés et marquetés. 11 Et l’ange de Dieu me dit en songe: Jacob! Je répondis: Me voici! 12 Il dit: Lève les yeux, et regarde: tous les boucs qui couvrent les brebis sont rayés, tachetés et marquetés; car j’ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban. 13 Je suis le Dieu de Béthel, où tu as oint un monument, où tu m’as fait un vœu. Maintenant, lève-toi, sors de ce pays, et retourne au pays de ta naissance.
14 Rachel et Léa répondirent, et lui dirent: Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison de notre père? 15 Ne sommes-nous pas regardées par lui comme des étrangères, puisqu’il nous a vendues, et qu’il a mangé notre argent? 16 Toute la richesse que Dieu a ôtée à notre père appartient à nous et à nos enfants. Fais maintenant tout ce que Dieu t’a dit.
17 Jacob se leva, et il fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur les chameaux. 18 Il emmena tout son troupeau et tous les biens qu’il possédait, le troupeau qui lui appartenait, qu’il avait acquis à Paddan-Aram; et il s’en alla vers Isaac, son père, au pays de Canaan. 19 Tandis que Laban était allé tondre ses brebis, Rachel déroba les théraphim de son père; 20 et Jacob trompa Laban, l’Araméen, en ne l’avertissant pas de sa fuite. 21 Il s’enfuit avec tout ce qui lui appartenait; il se leva, traversa le fleuve, et se dirigea vers la montagne de Galaad.
Jacob poursuivi par Laban
22 Le troisième jour, on annonça à Laban que Jacob s’était enfui. 23 Il prit avec lui ses frères, le poursuivit sept journées de marche, et l’atteignit à la montagne de Galaad. 24 Mais Dieu apparut la nuit en songe à Laban, l’Araméen, et lui dit: Garde-toi de parler à Jacob ni en bien ni en mal! 25 Laban atteignit donc Jacob. Jacob avait dressé sa tente sur la montagne; Laban dressa aussi la sienne, avec ses frères, sur la montagne de Galaad.
26 Alors Laban dit à Jacob: Qu’as-tu fait? Pourquoi m’as-tu trompé, et emmènes-tu mes filles comme des captives par l’épée? 27 Pourquoi as-tu pris la fuite en cachette, m’as-tu trompé, et ne m’as-tu point averti? Je t’aurais laissé partir au milieu des réjouissances et des chants, au son du tambourin et de la harpe. 28 Tu ne m’as pas permis d’embrasser mes fils et mes filles! C’est en insensé que tu as agi. 29 Ma main est assez forte pour vous faire du mal; mais le Dieu de votre père m’a dit hier: Garde-toi de parler à Jacob ni en bien ni en mal! 30 Maintenant que tu es parti, parce que tu languissais après la maison de ton père, pourquoi as-tu dérobé mes dieux?
31 Jacob répondit, et dit à Laban: J’avais de la crainte à la pensée que tu m’enlèverais peut-être tes filles. 32 Mais périsse celui auprès duquel tu trouveras tes dieux! En présence de nos frères, examine ce qui t’appartient chez moi, et prends-le. Jacob ne savait pas que Rachel les avait dérobés. 33 Laban entra dans la tente de Jacob, dans la tente de Léa, dans la tente des deux servantes, et il ne trouva rien. Il sortit de la tente de Léa, et entra dans la tente de Rachel. 34 Rachel avait pris les théraphim, les avait mis sous le bât du chameau, et s’était assise dessus. Laban fouilla toute la tente, et ne trouva rien. 35 Elle dit à son père: Que mon seigneur ne se fâche point, si je ne puis me lever devant toi, car j’ai ce qui est ordinaire aux femmes. Il chercha, et ne trouva point les théraphim.
36 Jacob s’irrita, et querella Laban. Il reprit la parole, et lui dit: Quel est mon crime, quel est mon péché, que tu me poursuives avec tant d’ardeur? 37 Quand tu as fouillé tous mes effets, qu’as-tu trouvé des effets de ta maison? Produis-le ici devant mes frères et tes frères, et qu’ils prononcent entre nous deux. 38 Voilà vingt ans que j’ai passés chez toi; tes brebis et tes chèvres n’ont point avorté, et je n’ai point mangé les béliers de ton troupeau. 39 Je ne t’ai point rapporté de bêtes déchirées, j’en ai payé le dommage; tu me redemandais ce qu’on me volait de jour et ce qu’on me volait de nuit. 40 La chaleur me dévorait pendant le jour, et le froid pendant la nuit, et le sommeil fuyait de mes yeux. 41 Voilà vingt ans que j’ai passés dans ta maison; je t’ai servi quatorze ans pour tes deux filles, et six ans pour ton troupeau, et tu as changé dix fois mon salaire. 42 Si je n’avais pas eu pour moi le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d’Abraham, celui que craint Isaac, tu m’aurais maintenant renvoyé à vide. Dieu a vu ma souffrance et le travail de mes mains, et hier il a prononcé son jugement.
43 Laban répondit, et dit à Jacob: Ces filles sont mes filles, ces enfants sont mes enfants, ce troupeau est mon troupeau, et tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Et que puis-je faire aujourd’hui pour mes filles, ou pour leurs enfants qu’elles ont mis au monde? 44 Viens, faisons alliance, moi et toi, et que cela serve de témoignage entre moi et toi!
45 Jacob prit une pierre, et il la dressa pour monument. 46 Jacob dit à ses frères: Ramassez des pierres. Ils prirent des pierres, et firent un monceau; et ils mangèrent là sur le monceau. 47 Laban l’appela Jegar-Sahadutha[a], et Jacob l’appela Galed[b]. 48 Laban dit: Que ce monceau serve aujourd’hui de témoignage entre moi et toi! C’est pourquoi on lui a donné le nom de Galed. 49 On l’appelle aussi Mitspa[c], parce que Laban dit: Que l’Eternel veille sur toi et sur moi, quand nous nous serons l’un et l’autre perdus de vue. 50 Si tu maltraites mes filles, et si tu prends encore d’autres femmes, ce n’est pas un homme qui sera avec nous, prends-y garde, c’est Dieu qui sera témoin entre moi et toi. 51 Laban dit à Jacob: Voici ce monceau, et voici ce monument que j’ai élevé entre moi et toi. 52 Que ce monceau soit témoin et que ce monument soit témoin que je n’irai point vers toi au-delà de ce monceau, et que tu ne viendras point vers moi au-delà de ce monceau et de ce monument, pour agir méchamment. 53 Que le Dieu d’Abraham et de Nachor, que le Dieu de leur père soit juge entre nous. Jacob jura par celui que craignait Isaac. 54 Jacob offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne, et il invita ses frères à manger; ils mangèrent donc, et passèrent la nuit sur la montagne.
55 Laban se leva de bon matin, baisa ses fils et ses filles, et les bénit. Ensuite il partit pour retourner dans sa demeure.

Le départ de Jacob
31 Jacob apprit que les fils de Laban disaient : Jacob s’est emparé de tout ce qui appartenait à notre père et c’est avec le bien de notre père qu’il s’est acquis toute cette richesse.
2 Il remarqua que l’attitude de Laban envers lui n’était plus comme avant. 3 L’Eternel lui dit : Retourne au pays de tes pères, auprès de ta parenté, et je serai avec toi.
4 Alors Jacob fit venir Rachel et Léa aux champs où il était avec ses troupeaux 5 et il leur dit : Je vois que votre père n’a plus envers moi la même attitude qu’auparavant. Mais le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi. 6 Vous savez vous-mêmes que j’ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces, 7 tandis que lui m’a trompé : par dix fois, il a changé les conditions de mon salaire. Heureusement, Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me causer du tort. 8 Quand votre père affirmait : « Les bêtes tachetées constitueront ton salaire », toutes les bêtes mettaient bas des petits tachetés. Et quand il affirmait : « Les mouchetés seront ton salaire », toutes les bêtes faisaient des petits mouchetés. 9 Ainsi, c’est Dieu qui a pris le bétail de votre père et qui me l’a donné. 10 En effet, à l’époque où les bêtes s’accouplent, j’ai vu en songe que les boucs qui couvraient les brebis étaient mouchetés, tachetés, ou marquetés. 11 L’ange de Dieu m’appela dans ce rêve : « Jacob ! » Et j’ai répondu : « J’écoute. » 12 « Lève les yeux, dit-il, et regarde : tous les boucs qui couvrent le troupeau sont mouchetés, tachetés, ou marquetés, car j’ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban. 13 Je suis le Dieu de Béthel, où tu as répandu de l’huile sur une pierre dressée en stèle, et où tu m’as fait un vœu. Maintenant, lève-toi, quitte ce pays et retourne dans ton pays natal. »
14 Rachel et Léa lui répondirent : Avons-nous encore quelque chose, ou un héritage, chez notre père ? 15 Ne nous a-t-il pas traitées comme des étrangères puisqu’il nous a vendues ? Et, de plus, il a mangé notre argent[a]. 16 Tous les biens que Dieu a sauvés de notre père nous appartiennent, à nous et à nos enfants. Maintenant, donc, fais tout ce que Dieu t’a demandé.
17 Alors Jacob se mit en route : il fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur les chameaux ; 18 il emmena tout son bétail et tous les biens qu’il avait acquis, en particulier, le cheptel qu’il avait amassé pendant son séjour à Paddân-Aram, pour rentrer chez son père Isaac au pays de Canaan. 19 Quant à Laban, il était parti tondre ses moutons. En partant, Rachel vola les idoles domestiques[b] de son père. 20 Ainsi Jacob partit à la dérobée sans informer Laban l’Araméen de sa fuite. 21 Il s’enfuit avec tout ce qui lui appartenait, il traversa l’Euphrate, puis se dirigea vers les monts de Galaad.
Jacob rejoint par Laban
22 Le troisième jour, on avertit Laban que Jacob s’était enfui. 23 Il prit avec lui des hommes de sa famille, le poursuivit pendant sept jours et le rattrapa dans les monts de Galaad. 24 Mais, pendant la nuit, Dieu vint parler à Laban l’Araméen dans un rêve. Il lui dit : Garde-toi de dire quoi que ce soit à Jacob, en bien ou en mal.
25 Quand Laban atteignit Jacob, celui-ci avait dressé sa tente dans la montagne. Laban et ses hommes s’installèrent eux aussi dans les monts de Galaad. 26 Laban interpella Jacob : Qu’est-ce qui t’a pris ? Pourquoi m’as-tu trompé ? Tu as emmené mes filles comme des captives de guerre ! 27 Pourquoi t’es-tu enfui en cachette ? Tu es parti comme un voleur sans me prévenir ! Je t’aurais laissé partir dans la joie avec des chants, au son du tambourin et de la lyre. 28 Tu ne m’as même pas laissé embrasser mes petits-enfants et mes filles ! Vraiment, tu as agi de façon stupide ! 29 Je pourrais vous faire du mal, mais le Dieu de votre père m’a parlé la nuit dernière et m’a dit : « Garde-toi de ne rien dire à Jacob ni en bien ni en mal. » 30 Maintenant, si tu es parti parce que tu languissais après la maison de ton père, pourquoi m’as-tu volé mes dieux ?
31 Jacob répliqua : J’avais peur que tu m’enlèves tes filles. 32 Quant à celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux, il ne vivra pas. Fouille en présence de nos gens ! Ce qui sera chez moi, reprends-le !
Jacob ignorait en effet que Rachel avait volé les idoles domestiques.
33 Laban fouilla la tente de Jacob, celle de Léa, puis celle des deux servantes, et ne trouva rien. En sortant de la tente de Léa, il entra dans celle de Rachel. 34 Or Rachel avait pris les idoles et les avait cachées dans la selle du chameau et s’était assise dessus. Laban fouilla toute la tente sans rien trouver. 35 Elle dit à son père : Que mon seigneur ne se fâche pas si je ne peux pas me lever devant toi car j’ai ce qui arrive habituellement aux femmes.
Il fouilla, mais ne trouva pas les idoles. 36 Alors Jacob se mit en colère et fit de violents reproches à Laban : Quelle faute ai-je commise, s’écria-t-il, qu’ai-je fait de mal pour que tu t’acharnes ainsi contre moi ? 37 Tu as fouillé toutes mes affaires. As-tu rien trouvé qui t’appartienne ? Produis-le ici en présence de mes gens et des tiens, et qu’ils servent d’arbitres entre nous deux. 38 Voilà vingt années que je suis chez toi ; tes brebis et tes chèvres n’ont pas avorté, et je n’ai jamais mangé les béliers de ton troupeau. 39 Si une bête se faisait déchirer par une bête sauvage, je ne te la rapportais pas[c] : c’est moi qui t’en dédommageais. Tu me réclamais ce qu’on m’avait volé de jour et ce qui m’avait été volé la nuit. 40 Le jour, j’étais dévoré par la chaleur ; la nuit, par le froid, et je ne pouvais pas dormir. 41 Voilà vingt ans que je suis chez toi : pendant quatorze ans, je t’ai servi pour tes deux filles, puis pendant six ans pour ton bétail ; dix fois, tu as changé mon salaire. 42 Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d’Abraham et celui que redoute Isaac, n’avait été de mon côté, tu m’aurais renvoyé aujourd’hui les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu ma misère et avec quelle peine j’ai travaillé. La nuit dernière, il a prononcé son verdict.
Jacob fait alliance avec Laban
43 – Ces filles sont mes filles, répondit Laban, ces fils mes fils, ces troupeaux sont miens et tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Et que puis-je faire aujourd’hui pour mes filles et pour les enfants qu’elles ont mis au monde ? 44 Maintenant donc, viens, concluons une alliance, toi et moi, et laissons ici un signe qui nous serve de témoin à tous deux.
45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre et l’érigea en stèle. 46 Puis il dit aux siens : Ramassez des pierres !
Ils ramassèrent des pierres, les entassèrent et, tous ensemble, ils mangèrent[d] là sur ce tas de pierres. 47 Laban le nomma Yegar-Sahadouta (Le tas de pierres du témoignage) et Jacob l’appela Galed (Le tas de pierres-témoin).
48 Laban déclara : Ce tas de pierres sert aujourd’hui de témoin entre toi et moi.
C’est pourquoi on le nomma Galed. 49 On l’appelle aussi Mitspa (Le lieu du guet), car Laban avait dit encore : Que l’Eternel fasse le guet entre nous deux quand nous nous serons perdus de vue l’un et l’autre. 50 Si tu maltraites mes filles et si tu prends d’autres femmes en plus d’elles, ce n’est pas un homme qui nous servira d’arbitre, prends-y garde : c’est Dieu qui sera témoin entre moi et toi. 51 Puis il ajouta : Vois ce tas de pierres et cette stèle que j’ai dressés entre moi et toi. 52 Ce tas de pierres et cette stèle nous serviront de témoins. Je ne dois pas dépasser ce tas de pierres et cette stèle dans ta direction, et tu ne dois pas les dépasser dans ma direction avec de mauvaises intentions. 53 Le Dieu d’Abraham et le dieu de Nahor[e] – c’était le Dieu de leur père[f] – seront juges entre nous !
Jacob prêta serment par le Dieu que redoutait son père Isaac. 54 Puis il offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne et invita sa parenté à un repas. Ils mangèrent ensemble et passèrent la nuit sur la montagne.

Jacob Runs Away From Laban
31 Jacob heard what Laban’s sons were saying. “Jacob has taken everything our father owned,” they said. “He has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.” 2 Jacob noticed that Laban’s feelings toward him had changed.
3 Then the Lord spoke to Jacob. He said, “Go back to your father’s land and to your relatives. I will be with you.”
4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah. He told them to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s feelings toward me have changed. But the God of my father has been with me. 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength. 7 But your father has cheated me. He has changed my pay ten times. In spite of everything that’s happened, God hasn’t let him harm me. 8 Sometimes Laban would say, ‘The speckled ones will be your pay.’ Then all the flocks had little ones with speckles. At other times he would say, ‘The striped ones will be your pay.’ Then all the flocks had little ones with stripes. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock and given them to me.
10 “Once during the mating season I had a dream. In my dream I looked and saw male goats mating with the flock. The goats had stripes, speckles or spots. 11 The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 12 He said, ‘Look around you. See the male goats mating with the flock. All of them have stripes, speckles or spots. That’s because I have seen everything that Laban has been doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel. That is where you poured olive oil on a sacred stone. There you made a promise to me. Now leave this land. Go back to your own land.’ ”
14 Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share of our father’s property? 15 Doesn’t our father think of us as outsiders? First he sold us. Now he has used up what he was paid for us. 16 All the wealth God took away from our father really belongs to us and our children. So do what God has told you to do.”
17 Then Jacob put his children and wives on camels. 18 He drove all his livestock ahead of him. He also took with him everything he had acquired in Paddan Aram. He left to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.
19 Laban had gone to clip the wool from his sheep. While he was gone, Rachel stole the statues of the family gods that belonged to her father. 20 And that’s not all. Jacob tricked Laban, the Aramean. He didn’t tell him he was running away. 21 So Jacob ran off with everything he had. He crossed the Euphrates River. And he headed for the hill country of Gilead.
Laban Chases Jacob
22 On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had run away. 23 He took his relatives with him and went after Jacob. Seven days later he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 Then God came to Laban, the Aramean, in a dream at night. He said to him, “Be careful. Do not say anything to Jacob, whether it is good or bad.”
25 Jacob had set up his tent in the hill country of Gilead. That’s where Laban caught up with him. Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have tricked me. You have taken my daughters away like prisoners of war. 27 Why did you run away in secret and trick me? Why didn’t you tell me? Then I could have sent you away happily. We could have sung to the music of tambourines and harps. 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you. But last night the God of your father spoke to me. He said, ‘Be careful. Do not say anything to Jacob, whether it is good or bad.’ 30 Now you have run away. You longed to go back to your father’s home. But why did you have to steal the statues of my gods?”
31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid. I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force. 32 But if you find anyone who has the statues of your gods, that person will not remain alive. While our relatives are watching, look for yourself. See if there’s anything of yours here with me. If you find anything belonging to you, take it.” But Jacob didn’t know that Rachel had stolen the statues.
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and Leah’s tent. He went into the tent of their two female servants. But he didn’t find anything. After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Rachel was the one who had taken the statues of Laban’s family gods. She had put them inside her camel’s saddle. She was sitting on them. Laban searched the whole tent. But he didn’t find anything.
35 Rachel said to her father, “I’m sorry, sir. I can’t get up for you right now. But don’t be angry with me. I’m having my monthly period.” So he searched everywhere but couldn’t find the statues of his gods.
36 Jacob was very angry with Laban. “What is my crime?” he asked. “What have I done to you that you hunt me down like this? 37 You have searched through all my things. What have you found that belongs to your family? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine. Let them decide between the two of us.
38 “I’ve been with you for 20 years now. The little ones of your sheep and goats were not dead when they were born. I haven’t eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I didn’t bring you animals torn apart by wild beasts. I made up for the loss myself. Also, you made me pay for anything stolen by day or night. 40 And what was my life like? The heat burned me in the daytime. And it was so cold at night that I froze. I couldn’t sleep. 41 That’s what it was like for the 20 years I was living with you. I worked for 14 years to marry your two daughters. I worked for six years to get my share of your flocks. You changed my pay ten times. 42 But the God of my father was with me. He is the God of Abraham and the God Isaac worshiped. If he hadn’t been with me, you would surely have sent me away without anything to show for all my work. But God has seen my hard times. He has seen all the work my hands have done. So last night he warned you.”
43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters. The children are my children. The flocks are my flocks. Everything you see is mine. But what can I do today about these daughters of mine? What can I do about the children they’ve had? 44 Come now. Let’s make a formal agreement, you and I. Let it be a witness between us.”
45 So Jacob set up a stone as a way to remember. 46 He said to his relatives, “Get some stones.” So they took stones and put them in a pile. And they ate there by it. 47 Laban named the pile of stones Jegar Sahadutha. Jacob named it Galeed.
48 Laban said, “This pile of stones is a witness between you and me today.” That’s why it was named Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah. That’s because Laban said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 Don’t treat my daughters badly. Don’t get married to any women besides my daughters. There isn’t anyone here to see what we’re doing. But remember that God is a witness between you and me.”
51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this pile of stones. And here is this stone I’ve set up. I’ve set them up between you and me. 52 This pile is a witness. And this stone is a witness. They are witnesses that I won’t go past this pile to harm you. And they are witnesses that you won’t go past this pile and this stone to harm me. 53 The God of Abraham and Nahor is also the God of their father. May their God decide which of us is right.”
So Jacob made a promise using the name of the God his father Isaac worshiped. 54 He offered a sacrifice there in the hill country. And he invited his relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they spent the night there.
55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters. He gave them his blessing. Then he left and returned home.

Jacob Flees From Laban
31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons(A) were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”(B) 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.(C)
3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back(D) to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”(E)
4 So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were. 5 He said to them, “I see that your father’s(F) attitude toward me is not what it was before,(G) but the God of my father has been with me.(H) 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,(I) 7 yet your father has cheated(J) me by changing my wages(K) ten times.(L) However, God has not allowed him to harm me.(M) 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’(N) then all the flocks bore streaked young. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock(O) and has given them to me.(P)
10 “In breeding season I once had a dream(Q) in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted. 11 The angel of God(R) said to me in the dream,(S) ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’(T) 12 And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted,(U) for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.(V) 13 I am the God of Bethel,(W) where you anointed a pillar(X) and where you made a vow(Y) to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.(Z)’”
14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share(AA) in the inheritance of our father’s estate? 15 Does he not regard us as foreigners?(AB) Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.(AC) 16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children.(AD) So do whatever God has told you.”
17 Then Jacob put his children and his wives(AE) on camels,(AF) 18 and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated(AG) in Paddan Aram,[a](AH) to go to his father Isaac(AI) in the land of Canaan.(AJ)
19 When Laban had gone to shear his sheep,(AK) Rachel stole her father’s household gods.(AL) 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived(AM) Laban the Aramean(AN) by not telling him he was running away.(AO) 21 So he fled(AP) with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River,(AQ) and headed for the hill country of Gilead.(AR)
Laban Pursues Jacob
22 On the third day(AS) Laban was told that Jacob had fled.(AT) 23 Taking his relatives(AU) with him(AV), he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.(AW) 24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean(AX) in a dream at night and said to him,(AY) “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”(AZ)
25 Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead(BA) when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?(BB) You’ve deceived me,(BC) and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.(BD) 27 Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me,(BE) so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels(BF) and harps?(BG) 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye.(BH) You have done a foolish thing. 29 I have the power to harm you;(BI) but last night the God of your father(BJ) said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’(BK) 30 Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household.(BL) But why did you steal(BM) my gods?(BN)”
31 Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.(BO) 32 But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live.(BP) In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.(BQ)
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent(BR) and into the tent of the two female servants,(BS) but he found nothing.(BT) After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods(BU) and put them inside her camel’s saddle(BV) and was sitting on them. Laban searched(BW) through everything in the tent but found nothing.
35 Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence;(BX) I’m having my period.(BY)” So he searched but could not find the household gods.(BZ)
36 Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged(CA) you that you hunt me down?(CB) 37 Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household?(CC) Put it here in front of your relatives(CD) and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.(CE)
38 “I have been with you for twenty years now.(CF) Your sheep and goats have not miscarried,(CG) nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen(CH) by day or night.(CI) 40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.(CJ) 41 It was like this for the twenty years(CK) I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters(CL) and six years for your flocks,(CM) and you changed my wages(CN) ten times.(CO) 42 If the God of my father,(CP) the God of Abraham(CQ) and the Fear of Isaac,(CR) had not been with me,(CS) you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands,(CT) and last night he rebuked you.(CU)”
43 Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks.(CV) All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne? 44 Come now, let’s make a covenant,(CW) you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”(CX)
45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.(CY) 46 He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap,(CZ) and they ate there by the heap. 47 Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.[b](DA)
48 Laban said, “This heap(DB) is a witness between you and me today.”(DC) That is why it was called Galeed. 49 It was also called Mizpah,[c](DD) because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other. 50 If you mistreat(DE) my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness(DF) between you and me.”(DG)
51 Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap,(DH) and here is this pillar(DI) I have set up between you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness,(DJ) that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap(DK) and pillar to my side to harm me.(DL) 53 May the God of Abraham(DM) and the God of Nahor,(DN) the God of their father, judge between us.”(DO)
So Jacob took an oath(DP) in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.(DQ) 54 He offered a sacrifice(DR) there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal.(DS) After they had eaten, they spent the night there.
55 Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters(DT) and blessed(DU) them. Then he left and returned home.[d](DV)

3 And the Lord said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.
9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.
14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.
16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.
17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.
20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.
21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.
22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.
23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.
26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?
28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images.
36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.
38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.
42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.
43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.
46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.
47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.
48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;
49 And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.
51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee:
52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
