Mort d’Abraham
25 Abraham prit encore une femme, nommée Ketura. 2 Elle lui enfanta Zimran, Jokschan, Medan, Madian, Jischbak et Schuach. 3 Jokschan engendra Séba et Dedan. Les fils de Dedan furent les Aschurim, les Letuschim et les Leummim. 4 Les fils de Madian furent Epha, Epher, Hénoc, Abida et Eldaa. Ce sont là tous les fils de Ketura.
5 Abraham donna tous ses biens à Isaac. 6 Il fit des dons aux fils de ses concubines; et, tandis qu’il vivait encore, il les envoya loin de son fils Isaac du côté de l’orient, dans le pays d’Orient.
7 Voici les jours des années de la vie d’Abraham: il vécut cent soixante quinze ans. 8 Abraham expira et mourut, après une heureuse vieillesse, âgé et rassasié de jours, et il fut recueilli auprès de son peuple. 9 Isaac et Ismaël, ses fils, l’enterrèrent dans la caverne de Macpéla, dans le champ d’Ephron, fils de Tsochar, le Héthien, vis-à-vis de Mamré. 10 C’est le champ qu’Abraham avait acquis des fils de Heth. Là furent enterrés Abraham et Sara, sa femme.
11 Après la mort d’Abraham, Dieu bénit Isaac, son fils. Il habitait près du puits de Lachaï-roï.
Postérité d’Ismaël
12 Voici la postérité d’Ismaël, fils d’Abraham, qu’Agar, l’Egyptienne, servante de Sara, avait enfanté à Abraham.
13 Voici les noms des fils d’Ismaël, par leurs noms, selon leurs générations: Nebajoth, premier-né d’Ismaël, Kédar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mischma, Duma, Massa, 15 Hadad, Théma, Jethur, Naphisch et Kedma. 16 Ce sont là les fils d’Ismaël; ce sont là leurs noms, selon leurs parcs et leurs enclos. Ils furent les douze chefs de leurs peuples.
17 Et voici les années de la vie d’Ismaël: cent trente-sept ans. Il expira et mourut, et il fut recueilli auprès de son peuple. 18 Ses fils habitèrent depuis Havila jusqu’à Schur, qui est en face de l’Egypte, en allant vers l’Assyrie. Il s’établit en présence de tous ses frères.
Postérité d’Isaac
19 Voici la postérité d’Isaac, fils d’Abraham. 20 Abraham engendra Isaac. Isaac était âgé de quarante ans, quand il prit pour femme Rebecca, fille de Bethuel, l’Araméen, de Paddan-Aram[a], et sœur de Laban, l’Araméen. 21 Isaac implora l’Eternel pour sa femme, car elle était stérile, et l’Eternel l’exauça: Rebecca, sa femme, devint enceinte. 22 Les enfants se heurtaient dans son sein; et elle dit: S’il en est ainsi, pourquoi suis-je enceinte? Elle alla consulter l’Eternel. 23 Et l’Eternel lui dit: Deux nations sont dans ton ventre, et deux peuples se sépareront au sortir de tes entrailles; un de ces peuples sera plus fort que l’autre, et le plus grand sera assujetti au plus petit[b]. 24 Les jours où elle devait accoucher s’accomplirent; et voici, il y avait deux jumeaux dans son ventre. 25 Le premier sortit entièrement roux, comme un manteau de poil; et on lui donna le nom d’Esaü[c]. 26 Ensuite sortit son frère, dont la main tenait le talon d’Esaü; et on lui donna le nom de Jacob[d]. Isaac était âgé de soixante ans, lorsqu’ils naquirent.
Esaü vend son droit d’aînesse
27 Ces enfants grandirent. Esaü devint un habile chasseur, un homme des champs; mais Jacob fut un homme tranquille, qui restait sous les tentes. 28 Isaac aimait Esaü, parce qu’il mangeait du gibier; et Rebecca aimait Jacob.
29 Comme Jacob faisait cuire un potage, Esaü revint des champs, accablé de fatigue. 30 Et Esaü dit à Jacob: Laisse-moi, je te prie, manger de ce roux, de ce roux-là, car je suis fatigué. C’est pour cela qu’on a donné à Esaü le nom d’Edom[e].
31 Jacob dit: Vends-moi aujourd’hui ton droit d’aînesse. 32 Esaü répondit: Voici, je m’en vais mourir; à quoi me sert ce droit d’aînesse? 33 Et Jacob dit: Jure-le-moi d’abord. Il le lui jura, et il vendit son droit d’aînesse à Jacob. 34 Alors Jacob donna à Esaü du pain et du potage de lentilles. Il mangea et but, puis se leva et s’en alla. C’est ainsi qu’Esaü méprisa le droit d’aînesse.

The Death of Abraham
25 Abraham married another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s descendants were the Asshurites, Letushites, and Leummites. 4 Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. These were all descendants of Abraham through Keturah.
5 Abraham gave everything he owned to his son Isaac. 6 But before he died, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them off to a land in the east, away from Isaac.
7 Abraham lived for 175 years, 8 and he died at a ripe old age, having lived a long and satisfying life. He breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. 10 This was the field Abraham had purchased from the Hittites and where he had buried his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who settled near Beer-lahai-roi in the Negev.
Ishmael’s Descendants
12 This is the account of the family of Ishmael, the son of Abraham through Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian servant. 13 Here is a list, by their names and clans, of Ishmael’s descendants: The oldest was Nebaioth, followed by Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These twelve sons of Ishmael became the founders of twelve tribes named after them, listed according to the places they settled and camped. 17 Ishmael lived for 137 years. Then he breathed his last and joined his ancestors in death. 18 Ishmael’s descendants occupied the region from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt in the direction of Asshur. There they lived in open hostility toward all their relatives.[a]
The Births of Esau and Jacob
19 This is the account of the family of Isaac, the son of Abraham. 20 When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
21 Isaac pleaded with the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children. The Lord answered Isaac’s prayer, and Rebekah became pregnant with twins. 22 But the two children struggled with each other in her womb. So she went to ask the Lord about it. “Why is this happening to me?” she asked.
23 And the Lord told her, “The sons in your womb will become two nations. From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals. One nation will be stronger than the other; and your older son will serve your younger son.”
24 And when the time came to give birth, Rebekah discovered that she did indeed have twins! 25 The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau.[b] 26 Then the other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob.[c] Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.
Esau Sells His Birthright
27 As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter. He was an outdoorsman, but Jacob had a quiet temperament, preferring to stay at home. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed eating the wild game Esau brought home, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 One day when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau arrived home from the wilderness exhausted and hungry. 30 Esau said to Jacob, “I’m starved! Give me some of that red stew!” (This is how Esau got his other name, Edom, which means “red.”)
31 “All right,” Jacob replied, “but trade me your rights as the firstborn son.”
32 “Look, I’m dying of starvation!” said Esau. “What good is my birthright to me now?”
33 But Jacob said, “First you must swear that your birthright is mine.” So Esau swore an oath, thereby selling all his rights as the firstborn to his brother, Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate the meal, then got up and left. He showed contempt for his rights as the firstborn.

3 Joksán pedig nemzé Sébát, és Dédánt. Dédánnak pedig fiai valának: Assurim, Letúsim és Leummim.
4 S Midiánnak fiai: Éfah, Éfer, Hánok, Abida és Eldaah: Mind ezek Ketúráhnak fiai.
5 Valamije pedig Ábrahámnak vala, mindazt Izsáknak adta vala.
6 Az ágyasok fiainak pedig, a kik Ábraháméi valának, ada Ábrahám ajándékokat, és elküldé azokat az õ fia mellõl, Izsák mellõl még éltében napkelet felé, napkeleti tartományba.
7 S ezek Ábrahám élete esztendeinek napjai, melyeket élt: száz hetvenöt esztendõ.
8 És kimúlék és meghala Ábrahám, jó vénségben, öregen és betelve az [élettel], és takaríttaték az õ népéhez.
9 És eltemeték õt Izsák és Ismáel az õ fiai a Makpelá barlangjában, Efronnak, a Khitteus Czohár fiának mezejében, mely Mamré átellenében van.

14 És Misma, Dúmah és Massza.
15 Hadar, Théma, Jetúr, Náfis és Kedmah.
16 Ezek az Ismáel fiai, és ezek azoknak nevei udvaraikban, falvaikban; tizenkét fejedelem az õ nemzetségök szerint.
17 Ezek pedig az Ismáel életének esztendei: száz harminczkét esztendõ. És kimúlék és meghala, és takaríttaték az õ népéhez.
18 Lakoztak pedig Havilától fogva Súrig, a mely Égyiptom átellenében van, a merre Assiriába mennek. Minden atyjafiával szemben esett az õ [lakása].
19 Ezek pedig Izsáknak az Ábrahám fiának nemzetségei: Ábrahám nemzé Izsákot.
20 Izsák pedig negyven esztendõs vala, a mikor feleségûl vette Rebekát a Siriából való Bethuélnek leányát, Mésopotámiából, a Siriából való Lábánnak húgát.
21 És könyörge Izsák az Úrnak az õ feleségéért, mivelhogy magtalan vala, és az Úr meghallgatá õt: és teherbe esék Rebeka, az õ felesége.
22 Tusakodnak vala pedig a fiak az õ méhében. Akkor monda: Ha így van, miért vagyok én így? Elméne azért, hogy megkérdezze az Urat.
23 És monda az Úr õnéki: Két nemzetség van a te méhedben; és két nép válik ki a te belsõdbõl, egyik nép a másik népnél erõsebb lesz, és a nagyobbik szolgál a kisebbiknek.
24 És betelének az õ szülésének napjai, és ímé kettõsök valának az õ méhében.
25 És kijöve az elsõ; vereses vala, mindenestõl szõrös, mint egy lazsnak; azért nevezék nevét Ézsaúnak.
26 Azután kijöve az õ atyjafia, kezével Ézsaú sarkába fogódzva; azért nevezék nevét Jákóbnak. Izsák pedig hatvan esztendõs vala, a mikor ezek születének.
27 És felnevekedének a gyermekek, és Ézsaú vadászathoz értõ mezei ember vala; Jákób pedig szelíd ember, sátorban lakozó.
28 Szereti vala azért Izsák Ézsaút, mert szájaíze szerint vala a vad; Rebeka pedig szereti vala Jákóbot.
29 Jákób egyszer valami fõzeléket fõze, és Ézsaú megjövén elfáradva a mezõrõl,
30 Monda Ézsaú Jákóbnak: Engedd, hogy ehessem a veres ételbõl, mert fáradt vagyok. Ezért nevezék nevét Edomnak.
31 Jákób pedig monda: Add el hát nékem azonnal a te elsõszülöttségedet.
32 És monda Ézsaú; Ímé én halni járok, mire való hát nékem az én elsõszülöttségem?
33 És monda Jákób: Esküdjél meg hát nékem azonnal, és megesküvék néki és eladá az õ elsõszülöttségét Jákóbnak.
34 S akkor Jákób ada Ézsaúnak kenyeret, és fõtt lencsét, és evék és ivék, és felkele és elméne. Így veté meg Ézsaú az elsõszülöttséget.
