Mise à l’épreuve d’Abraham
22 Après cela, Dieu mit Abraham à l'épreuve. Il lui dit: «Abraham!» Celui-ci répondit: «Me voici!» 2 Dieu dit: «Prends ton fils unique, celui que tu aimes, Isaac. Va-t'en au pays de Morija et là offre-le en holocauste sur l'une des montagnes que je t’indiquerai.»
3 Abraham se leva de bon matin, sella son âne et prit avec lui deux serviteurs et son fils Isaac. Il fendit du bois pour l'holocauste et partit pour aller à l'endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué. 4 Le troisième jour, Abraham leva les yeux et vit l'endroit de loin. 5 Il dit à ses serviteurs: «Restez ici avec l'âne. Le jeune homme et moi, nous irons jusque là-bas pour adorer, puis nous reviendrons vers vous.» 6 Abraham prit le bois pour l'holocauste, le chargea sur son fils Isaac et porta lui-même le feu et le couteau. Ils marchèrent tous les deux ensemble. 7 Alors Isaac s'adressa à son père Abraham en disant: «Mon père!» Il répondit: «Me voici, mon fils!» Isaac reprit: «Voici le feu et le bois, mais où se trouve l'agneau pour l'holocauste?» 8 Abraham répondit: «Mon fils, Dieu pourvoira lui-même à l'agneau pour l'holocauste.» Et ils continuèrent à marcher tous les deux ensemble.
9 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés à l'endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué, Abraham y construisit un autel et rangea le bois. Il attacha son fils Isaac et le mit sur l'autel par-dessus le bois. 10 Puis Abraham tendit la main et prit le couteau pour égorger son fils. 11 Alors l'ange de l'Eternel l'appela depuis le ciel et dit: «Abraham! Abraham!» Il répondit: «Me voici!» 12 L'ange dit: «Ne porte pas la main sur l'enfant et ne lui fais rien, car je sais maintenant que tu crains Dieu et que tu ne m'as pas refusé ton fils unique.» 13 Abraham leva les yeux et vit [derrière lui] un bélier retenu par les cornes dans un buisson. Il alla prendre le bélier et l'offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils. 14 Abraham donna à cet endroit le nom de Yahvé-Jiré[a]. C'est pourquoi l'on dit aujourd'hui: «A la montagne de l'Eternel il sera pourvu.»
15 L'ange de l'Eternel appela une deuxième fois Abraham depuis le ciel. 16 Il dit: «*Je le jure par moi-même – déclaration de l'Eternel –, parce que tu as fait cela et que tu n'as pas refusé ton fils unique, 17 je te bénirai et je multiplierai ta descendance[b]: elle sera *aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, pareille au sable qui est au bord de la mer[c]. De plus, ta descendance possédera les villes de ses ennemis. 18 *Toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta descendance[d], parce que tu m’as obéi.»
19 Abraham retourna vers ses serviteurs. Ils se levèrent et repartirent ensemble à Beer-Shéba. En effet, Abraham habitait à Beer-Shéba.
20 Après cela, on annonça à Abraham: «Milca a aussi donné des fils à ton frère Nachor: 21 Uts, son aîné, Buz, son frère, Kemuel, le père d'Aram, 22 Késed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph et Bethuel. 23 Bethuel a eu pour fille Rebecca. Voilà les huit fils que Milca a donnés à Nachor, le frère d'Abraham. 24 Sa concubine, appelée Réuma, a aussi mis au monde Thébach, Gaham, Tahash et Maaca.»

Isaac sera-t-il sacrifié ?
22 Après ces événements, Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve[a]. Il l’appela : Abraham !
Et celui-ci répondit : Me voici.
2 – Prends Isaac, ton fils unique, que tu aimes, lui dit Dieu, et va au pays de Moriya. Là, tu me l’offriras en sacrifice sur l’une des collines, celle que je t’indiquerai[b].
3 Le lendemain, Abraham se leva de grand matin, sella son âne et emmena deux de ses serviteurs ainsi que son fils Isaac ; il fendit du bois pour l’holocauste, puis il se mit en route en direction de l’endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué.
4 Après trois jours de marche, Abraham, levant les yeux, aperçut le lieu dans le lointain. 5 Alors il dit à ses serviteurs : Restez ici avec l’âne ; le garçon et moi, nous irons jusque là-bas pour adorer Dieu, puis nous reviendrons vers vous.
6 Abraham chargea le bois de l’holocauste sur son fils Isaac ; il prit lui-même des braises pour le feu et le couteau, puis tous deux s’en allèrent ensemble.
7 Isaac s’adressa à son père Abraham et lui dit : Mon père !
Abraham dit : Qu’y a-t-il, mon fils ?
– Voici le feu et le bois, dit-il, mais où est l’agneau pour l’holocauste ?
8 Abraham répondit : Mon fils, Dieu pourvoira lui-même à l’agneau pour l’holocauste.
Et ils poursuivirent leur chemin tous deux ensemble.
9 Quand ils furent arrivés à l’endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué, Abraham construisit un autel et y disposa les bûches. Puis il ligota son fils Isaac et le mit sur l’autel par-dessus le bois. 10 Alors Abraham prit en main le couteau pour immoler son fils. 11 A ce moment-là, l’ange de l’Eternel lui cria du haut du ciel : Abraham ! Abraham !
– Me voici, répondit-il.
12 L’ange reprit : Ne porte pas la main sur le garçon, ne lui fais pas de mal, car maintenant je sais que tu crains Dieu puisque tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils unique.
13 Alors Abraham aperçut un bélier qui s’était pris les cornes dans un buisson[c]. Il s’en saisit et l’offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils. 14 Abraham appela ce lieu-là : Adonaï-Yireéh (le Seigneur pourvoira). C’est pourquoi on dit aujourd’hui : Sur la montagne du Seigneur, il sera pourvu.
15 Puis l’ange de l’Eternel appela une seconde fois Abraham du haut du ciel 16 et lui dit : Je le jure par moi-même, parole de l’Eternel, puisque tu as fait cela, puisque tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique, 17 je te comblerai de bénédictions, je multiplierai ta descendance et je la rendrai aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel et que les grains de sable au bord de la mer. Ta descendance dominera sur ses ennemis[d]. 18 Tous les peuples de la terre seront bénis à travers ta descendance parce que tu m’as obéi.
19 Abraham revint vers ses serviteurs et ils se remirent ensemble en route pour rentrer à Beer-Sheva où Abraham continua d’habiter.
La descendance de Nahor
20 Après ces événements, on annonça à Abraham que Milka avait donné des enfants à Nahor, son frère : 21 Outs son premier-né, Bouz le second, Qemouel, père d’Aram, 22 Késéd, Hazo, Pildash, Yidlaph et Betouel. 23 Betouel fut le père de Rébecca. Ce sont là les huit fils que Milka avait donnés à Nahor, frère d’Abraham. 24 Son épouse de second rang Reouma lui donna aussi des enfants : Tébah, Gaham, Tahash et Maaka.

Abraham’s Faith Confirmed(A)
22 Now it came to pass after these things that (B)God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
2 Then He said, “Take now your son, (C)your only son Isaac, whom you (D)love, and go (E)to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a (F)burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the [a]lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will (G)come back to you.”
6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and (H)laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!”
And he said, “Here I am, my son.”
Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the [b]lamb for a burnt offering?”
8 And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the (I)lamb for a (J)burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and (K)laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 But the (L)Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”
So he said, “Here I am.”
12 And He said, (M)“Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for (N)now I know that you fear God, since you have not (O)withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, [c]The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: (P)“By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— 17 blessing I will (Q)bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants (R)as the stars of the heaven (S)and as the sand which is on the seashore; and (T)your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 (U)In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, (V)because you have obeyed My voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to (W)Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
The Family of Nahor
20 Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, “Indeed (X)Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: 21 (Y)Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father (Z)of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 And (AA)Bethuel begot [d]Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.

Abraham Tested
22 Some time later God tested(A) Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am,”(B) he replied.
2 Then God said, “Take your son(C), your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah.(D) Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering(E) on a mountain I will show you.(F)”
3 Early the next morning(G) Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.(H)”
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac,(I) and he himself carried the fire and the knife.(J) As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb(K) for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide(L) the lamb(M) for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
9 When they reached the place God had told him about,(N) Abraham built an altar(O) there and arranged the wood(P) on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar,(Q) on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife(R) to slay his son.(S) 11 But the angel of the Lord(T) called out to him from heaven,(U) “Abraham! Abraham!”(V)
“Here I am,”(W) he replied.
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,(X) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.(Y)”
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns.(Z) He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.(AA) 14 So Abraham called(AB) that place The Lord(AC) Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.(AD)”
15 The angel of the Lord(AE) called to Abraham from heaven(AF) a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself,(AG) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,(AH) 17 I will surely bless you(AI) and make your descendants(AJ) as numerous as the stars in the sky(AK) and as the sand on the seashore.(AL) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,(AM) 18 and through your offspring[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,[c](AN) because you have obeyed me.”(AO)
19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba.(AP) And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s Sons
20 Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:(AQ) 21 Uz(AR) the firstborn, Buz(AS) his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.(AT)” 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.(AU) Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AV) 24 His concubine,(AW) whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
