Sacrifice d’Isaac
22 Après ces choses, Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve, et lui dit: Abraham! Et il répondit: Me voici! 2 Dieu dit: Prends ton fils, ton unique, celui que tu aimes, Isaac; va-t’en au pays de Morija, et là offre-le en holocauste sur l’une des montagnes que je te dirai.
3 Abraham se leva de bon matin, sella son âne, et prit avec lui deux serviteurs et son fils Isaac. Il fendit du bois pour l’holocauste, et partit pour aller au lieu que Dieu lui avait dit.
4 Le troisième jour, Abraham, levant les yeux, vit le lieu de loin. 5 Et Abraham dit à ses serviteurs: Restez ici avec l’âne; moi et le jeune homme, nous irons jusque-là pour adorer, et nous reviendrons auprès de vous. 6 Abraham prit le bois pour l’holocauste, le chargea sur son fils Isaac, et porta dans sa main le feu et le couteau. Et ils marchèrent tous deux ensemble. 7 Alors Isaac, parlant à Abraham, son père, dit: Mon père! Et il répondit: Me voici, mon fils! Isaac reprit: Voici le feu et le bois; mais où est l’agneau pour l’holocauste? 8 Abraham répondit: Mon fils, Dieu se pourvoira lui-même de l’agneau pour l’holocauste. Et ils marchèrent tous deux ensemble.
9 Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés au lieu que Dieu lui avait dit, Abraham y éleva un autel, et rangea le bois. Il lia son fils Isaac, et le mit sur l’autel, par-dessus le bois. 10 Puis Abraham étendit la main, et prit le couteau, pour égorger son fils. 11 Alors l’ange de l’Eternel l’appela des cieux, et dit: Abraham! Abraham! Et il répondit: Me voici! 12 L’ange dit: N’avance pas ta main sur l’enfant, et ne lui fais rien; car je sais maintenant que tu crains Dieu, et que tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique. 13 Abraham leva les yeux, et vit derrière lui un bélier retenu dans un buisson par les cornes; et Abraham alla prendre le bélier, et l’offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils. 14 Abraham donna à ce lieu le nom de Yahvé-Jiré[a]. C’est pourquoi l’on dit aujourd’hui: A la montagne de l’Eternel il sera pourvu.
15 L’ange de l’Eternel appela une seconde fois Abraham des cieux, 16 et dit: Je le jure par moi-même, parole de l’Eternel! parce que tu as fais cela, et que tu n’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique, 17 je te bénirai et je multiplierai ta postérité[b], comme les étoiles du ciel et comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer; et ta postérité possédera la porte de ses ennemis[c]. 18 Toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta postérité[d], parce que tu as obéi à ma voix.
19 Abraham étant retourné vers ses serviteurs, ils se levèrent et s’en allèrent ensemble à Beer-Schéba; car Abraham demeurait à Beer-Schéba.
20 Après ces choses, on fit à Abraham un rapport, en disant: Voici, Milca a aussi enfanté des fils à Nachor, ton frère: 21 Uts, son premier-né, Buz, son frère, Kemuel, père d’Aram, 22 Késed, Hazo, Pildasch, Jidlaph et Bethuel. 23 Bethuel a engendré Rebecca. Ce sont là les huit fils que Milca a enfantés à Nachor, frère d’Abraham. 24 Sa concubine, nommée Réuma, a aussi enfanté Thébach, Gaham, Tahasch et Maaca.

Mise à l’épreuve d’Abraham
22 Après cela, Dieu mit Abraham à l'épreuve. Il lui dit: «Abraham!» Celui-ci répondit: «Me voici!» 2 Dieu dit: «Prends ton fils unique, celui que tu aimes, Isaac. Va-t'en au pays de Morija et là offre-le en holocauste sur l'une des montagnes que je t’indiquerai.»
3 Abraham se leva de bon matin, sella son âne et prit avec lui deux serviteurs et son fils Isaac. Il fendit du bois pour l'holocauste et partit pour aller à l'endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué. 4 Le troisième jour, Abraham leva les yeux et vit l'endroit de loin. 5 Il dit à ses serviteurs: «Restez ici avec l'âne. Le jeune homme et moi, nous irons jusque là-bas pour adorer, puis nous reviendrons vers vous.» 6 Abraham prit le bois pour l'holocauste, le chargea sur son fils Isaac et porta lui-même le feu et le couteau. Ils marchèrent tous les deux ensemble. 7 Alors Isaac s'adressa à son père Abraham en disant: «Mon père!» Il répondit: «Me voici, mon fils!» Isaac reprit: «Voici le feu et le bois, mais où se trouve l'agneau pour l'holocauste?» 8 Abraham répondit: «Mon fils, Dieu pourvoira lui-même à l'agneau pour l'holocauste.» Et ils continuèrent à marcher tous les deux ensemble.
9 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés à l'endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué, Abraham y construisit un autel et rangea le bois. Il attacha son fils Isaac et le mit sur l'autel par-dessus le bois. 10 Puis Abraham tendit la main et prit le couteau pour égorger son fils. 11 Alors l'ange de l'Eternel l'appela depuis le ciel et dit: «Abraham! Abraham!» Il répondit: «Me voici!» 12 L'ange dit: «Ne porte pas la main sur l'enfant et ne lui fais rien, car je sais maintenant que tu crains Dieu et que tu ne m'as pas refusé ton fils unique.» 13 Abraham leva les yeux et vit [derrière lui] un bélier retenu par les cornes dans un buisson. Il alla prendre le bélier et l'offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils. 14 Abraham donna à cet endroit le nom de Yahvé-Jiré[a]. C'est pourquoi l'on dit aujourd'hui: «A la montagne de l'Eternel il sera pourvu.»
15 L'ange de l'Eternel appela une deuxième fois Abraham depuis le ciel. 16 Il dit: «*Je le jure par moi-même – déclaration de l'Eternel –, parce que tu as fait cela et que tu n'as pas refusé ton fils unique, 17 je te bénirai et je multiplierai ta descendance[b]: elle sera *aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, pareille au sable qui est au bord de la mer[c]. De plus, ta descendance possédera les villes de ses ennemis. 18 *Toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta descendance[d], parce que tu m’as obéi.»
19 Abraham retourna vers ses serviteurs. Ils se levèrent et repartirent ensemble à Beer-Shéba. En effet, Abraham habitait à Beer-Shéba.
20 Après cela, on annonça à Abraham: «Milca a aussi donné des fils à ton frère Nachor: 21 Uts, son aîné, Buz, son frère, Kemuel, le père d'Aram, 22 Késed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph et Bethuel. 23 Bethuel a eu pour fille Rebecca. Voilà les huit fils que Milca a donnés à Nachor, le frère d'Abraham. 24 Sa concubine, appelée Réuma, a aussi mis au monde Thébach, Gaham, Tahash et Maaca.»

22 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.
15 And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;
21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

Abraham Tested
22 Some time later God tested(A) Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am,”(B) he replied.
2 Then God said, “Take your son(C), your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah.(D) Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering(E) on a mountain I will show you.(F)”
3 Early the next morning(G) Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.(H)”
6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac,(I) and he himself carried the fire and the knife.(J) As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb(K) for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide(L) the lamb(M) for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
9 When they reached the place God had told him about,(N) Abraham built an altar(O) there and arranged the wood(P) on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar,(Q) on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife(R) to slay his son.(S) 11 But the angel of the Lord(T) called out to him from heaven,(U) “Abraham! Abraham!”(V)
“Here I am,”(W) he replied.
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,(X) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.(Y)”
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns.(Z) He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.(AA) 14 So Abraham called(AB) that place The Lord(AC) Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.(AD)”
15 The angel of the Lord(AE) called to Abraham from heaven(AF) a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself,(AG) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,(AH) 17 I will surely bless you(AI) and make your descendants(AJ) as numerous as the stars in the sky(AK) and as the sand on the seashore.(AL) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,(AM) 18 and through your offspring[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,[c](AN) because you have obeyed me.”(AO)
19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba.(AP) And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s Sons
20 Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:(AQ) 21 Uz(AR) the firstborn, Buz(AS) his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.(AT)” 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.(AU) Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AV) 24 His concubine,(AW) whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
