17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
18 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing anything else, go through on my feet.
20 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

Edom Denies Israel Passage
14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh(A) to the king of Edom,(B) saying:
“This is what your brother Israel says: You know(C) about all the hardships(D) that have come on us. 15 Our ancestors went down into Egypt,(E) and we lived there many years.(F) The Egyptians mistreated(G) us and our ancestors, 16 but when we cried out to the Lord, he heard our cry(H) and sent an angel(I) and brought us out of Egypt.(J)
“Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.(K) 17 Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.(L)”
18 But Edom(M) answered:
“You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.(N)”
19 The Israelites replied:
“We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock(O) drink any of your water, we will pay for it.(P) We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”
20 Again they answered:
“You may not pass through.(Q)”
Then Edom(R) came out against them with a large and powerful army. 21 Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory,(S) Israel turned away from them.(T)

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

24 When the time came for her to give birth,(A) there were twin boys in her womb.(B) 25 The first to come out was red,(C) and his whole body was like a hairy garment;(D) so they named him Esau.[a](E) 26 After this, his brother came out,(F) with his hand grasping Esau’s heel;(G) so he was named Jacob.[b](H) Isaac was sixty years old(I) when Rebekah gave birth to them.
27 The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,(J) a man of the open country,(K) while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28 Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,(L) loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(M)
29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(N) Esau came in from the open country,(O) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(P) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[c])(Q)
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(R)”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 But Jacob said, “Swear(S) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(T) to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(U) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
So Esau despised his birthright.

37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(G) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”
38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(H)
39 His father Isaac answered him,(I)
“Your dwelling will be
away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(J) of heaven above.(K)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(L) your brother.(M)
But when you grow restless,
you will throw his yoke

41 Esau held a grudge(O) against Jacob(P) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(Q) for my father are near; then I will kill(R) my brother Jacob.”(S)
