¹⁷ God listened to Leah,^(A) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.

¹³ But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,^(A) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.^(B)

²⁶ and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. ²⁷ I prayed^(A) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.

²⁰ So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.^(A) She named^(B) him Samuel,^[a](C) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

⁷ The Lord said, “I have indeed seen^(A) the misery^(B) of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned^(C) about their suffering.^(D)
