² “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet^(A) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”^(B)

⁴ Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet^(A) and rest under this tree.

² Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers,^(A) for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.^(B)

²⁸ As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. ²⁹ But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

¹⁵ When she and the members of her household^(A) were baptized,^(B) she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

¹⁷ When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”^(A)

¹⁸ He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.^[a](B) No one has taken me in for the night. ¹⁹ We have both straw and fodder^(C) for our donkeys^(D) and bread and wine^(E) for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”

²⁰ “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” ²¹ So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.^(F)
